The path to a new Journey!

Hi everyone,

It's been over a year since my last blog post and I have to admit it feels a little weird, and nerve wracking, but at the same time exciting. So much has happened between then and now that changed and in some way liberated me. So I wanted to share some of that with all of you as well as talk about this new journey that I want to take. So let's get started!

I'm not one to tell a long story so I will cut this pretty short. In the middle of last year I had some medical complications that restricted me from sitting down for long periods of time, and that really impacted the amount of time I could work on games. It was a frustrating period as my full time job is also programming and so that required a lot of sitting. (A standing desk was not an option at the time for my office but has since become an option.)

After trying many solutions that didn't end up working, I ended up getting an out patient surgery that solved my problem. I was relieved and was ready to keep working on games again, but suddenly I got a big news announcement from my wife. We were expecting a baby!

This is Caleb! Our baby boy!
Now it wasn't a complete surprise as we were trying to have a baby but we just didn't expect it so quickly! A lot of time has passed since then, 6 months to be more exact, and we know that we will have a boy and name him Caleb. Many of you might be a long way from having a child or might not be wanting to have kids (and that's perfectly fine) but for me having a child has actually been a dream of mine, and I'm looking forward to it.

The thing about having a child is that it really makes you think about your future and what kind of legacy you want to leave behind. This brings me to my decision and new path which I want for us to go in.

For a long time I've wanted to do an original game using Cosmoids. Cosmoids are pokemon like creatures that a group of artist and I came up with a while ago. The whole point was to make an original game using these creatures but for some reason or another it never happened. I always felt a responsibility to PTD, and it honestly felt like an obligation. Having a child has reminded me that this is not an obligation but something I do out of passion. Something that I should enjoy doing. I know that it may make some people disappointed or mad but I just can't work on PTD3 any more. The main issue with PTD is that I can't really share it with the world. It has to exist in sort of a shadow and that's not something that I want. I want to make a game and share it with everybody, have it be on different platforms (Flash has been slowly dying for years now, which is sad).

And so I've decided that I want to make a Tower Defense game like PTD but with Cosmoids. I believe that Tower Defense games can still be fresh and fun.

So in closing I want to say "Thank You". Whether you just started playing PTD or you've been around for a while. Thanks! If you are interested in being a part of this new journey I would love to have you, your feedback is invaluable to me and I would love to hear it.

So as always.. let me know what you think!

Sincerely,
Sam

  4. Been here since I was in 4th grade, now graduating high school in a few weeks. It's been fun. I can still remember the days when I woke up super early, exited to get the daily gift. I remember when I tried to solve the puzzles to get the mystery gifts. Good times.

I just finished PTD2,and I'd like you to make your cosmoids game just like it. So I can walk around in your games like the past 2 years. I'll be waiting for you, and let me hear more about Caleb!

    1. Hi Allan, I'm not currently planning to have walking around in Cosmoids but thanks for letting me know that is something you would like for a future game. I honestly felt like it was 50/50 with people liking or not liking the walking around part.

  11. I'm glad to hear that you are feeling better and a BABY BOY that's must be such an amazing feeling! I hope this new Cosmoids thing works out for you, I'll definitely be looking out for anything you create. I've been a fan of you and your creations for so many years, since I was a child. I'm sure your new venture will be a hit, I have consistently played TD games for probably 10 years now and I'm still enjoying them. I am excited to see what you have come up with to enhance the genre and bring in new players!

  12. I sent a comment before, but it looks like it wasn't published properly or something went wrong in the process. Anyways, this is a rough text of what I wrote some time ago. I hope I can still express clearly what I was supposed to say:

Firstly, congratulations to your new baby! I may not be a parent yet, but I already know how fulfilling, fun, exciting, albeit sometimes tiring, parenting can get based on my experiences as a baby-sitter! God bless him that he may grow as fine as a man can be, and God bless your family! Once again, congratulations to your upcoming Caleb!

Secondly, don't forget to take care of your health and get some rest from time to time. It's important that you don't overwork yourself since you have a family to attend to. Don't feel too attached to this hobby of yours, since after all it's just a hobby. Family and real life comes first. You're allowed to take some breaks. Just don't get to addicted to your breaks though, since you do make money out of this and I personally think it's kind of a bummer if you just ignore your customers. They are like your customers after all. But it's up to you, since I think you know the best course of action to take.

Lastly, I'll be looking forward to this new Cosmoids TD that you're planning to develop! Being a hardcore fan of tower defense games, I immediately fell for the way you adapted the Pokemon franchise into a TD game, since I was also a die-hard fan of Pokemon. However, I personally don't think it's a good idea to cease the development of your last installment of your PTD series. Why not just continue developing PTD3 slowly but surely until it's finally complete, while you're developing your new Cosmoids game? You could develop it in your spare time, since I would guess that making the levels are easy. Or you could pass it on to another developer. Whatever way you do it, I hope you won't abandon PTD3 since it's already made a lot of progress.

I'm glad that you're finally taking on a whole new level in developing games! I'll be looking forward to what you're going to show us in the future! And once again congratulations to your coming child! God bless your family :)

P.S.: Can we see some Cosmoids design please?

    1. Thanks for the kind words, I do take them to heart. I believe that while it might be good to work on ptd3 I have so little time that pretty much I could only do one or the other (ptd3 or cosmoids) and I do think for the future of SnD games and for the players Cosmoids is the better path.

Thanks for supporting and I look forward to revealing some Cosmoids designs in the near future :)

  22. Are you going to make the Pokémon Tower defense 1 for android? The last version, because the only available apk is in the first versions.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Maybe not investing in the future is always good, but can not let some things leave behind, in my country everything that starts, does not end, there in the USA it should be quite common for things to end, exeto One Piece this will never come back and I I would like things not to be finished, I'm afraid that a lot of good design is not finished, many animes, games are canceled or not finished.
If you no longer want to continue with PTD, you could leave the last adjustments or things that were not finished, finished, because it would be very sad a series that caused so many people to be canceled, at least one final point in history.
The versions of Android could send to some friend of yours to port or something.
I just wanted you to not feel obligated to do something that so many people like.
And congratulations on the baby, future wish for him, is not easy right?
Maybe in free time you could give an end to PTD!
    Follow what you want.

    1. Thanks for the words, I do think sometimes you have to end something even if it's not finished because you need to move forward. It may not be the easiest decision but sometimes you do have to take risk and follow your heart.

I have many hobbies. I love to travel and read. But my favorite hobby is cooking. Let me tell you why! First, I'll tell you a little bit about why I started cooking. Secondly, I'll give you some information about what I like to cook. Third, I will say how I use the Food Blog for cooking.

When I started cooking, I was 10 years old. My mom wants me to be a chef. She has always believed that girls have to make different types of food, because one day they will get married. In my country, it is normal for girls not to cook. I feel lucky because I can cook many dishes. Now that I cook some of the dishes my children and husband love, I become happy and proud of my mother and myself. fooddy
