A new story direction!

A little bit less than a month is left before Caleb is born, we are very excited we have all the things ready for him and can't wait!

A new story direction!

When playing games I have found that personally for me having a story makes me more likely to finish a game. Even if the game wasn't that good, if I got invested in the story (even if wasn't that good) I felt more compelled to finish it. 

This was the reason I choose to add a story element to PTD. I notice no tower defense games had a big story and I thought it would be a great addition.

So naturally for Cosmoids TD I also wanted to have a story. Originally I envisioned Cosmoids as something very similar to Pokemon. Over the years I've thought about the origin story of Cosmoids and it has changed here and there but some of the same elements have remained the same.

The story started with a powerful alien being known as the Wishmaker that encounters a young boy and grants his wish to bring these Cosmoids to Earth. I was pretty committed to this story line until a freelance artist that I hired made a concept art for the Wishmaker. I thought it looked so cool that I decided to make the Wishmaker the main character.

Along with changing the main character it was more interesting to also have the game take place in the Cosmoids original planet. This will allow for some creative environments that you wouldn't find on earth.

The next major change that I wanted to make is that in pokemon, while the pokemon are smarter than your average animal they mostly co-existed with humans the way pets do. For Cosmoids now that we are exploring their planet. I thought it would be very interesting if the Cosmoids were more humanoid like. They could speak a language, they used tools, clothing, communities. So instead of capturing them as beloved pets. You will recruit them for your cause. Below is a small preview of how a cosmoids like Chameleaf will look like. Keep in mind this is an early work in progress.

I've been mostly focused these past few weeks to working with my artist, trying to nail down the new direction so I haven't work a lot of the prototype but next week I will talk about how to focus on features and task that are needed versus wanted.

    And one question, or two: will you have to battle and if that is yes, how many cosmoids ca be in your party if there is no battling what would you normally do in cosmoids

  4. Nice! Actually I played the PTD games mainly for the story so this mini blog is actually pretty good. Hope the coding for the second prototypes won't be too hard for you.

    1. Good to hear you enjoyed the story for PTD! I probably spent more time on figuring out the story then the actual levels >.<. As far as coding, it's not really about it being difficult, it's more about how much time I have.

  7. I really like the ideas for the battle system, and I like the idea of you being on their planet a lot more. I personally do not like the humanoid idea, but I am also probably misunderstanding it. It'd be cool for there to be humanoid creatures, but I don't like the idea of all the creatures having a humanoid form, although as I said I'm probably misunderstanding it.

    I do have 1 question, though. Will there be "evolutions" that happen based on level similarly to Pokemon? (Obviously it wouldn't be called that, but like a growth system of some kind.) Or will the creatures just stay as they are when received?

    I tried clicking "notify me" but it won't let me, so I guess I'll just have to check in and see if I got a reply every once in a while lol. Keep up the good work.

    1. In the next blog post I will clarify the humanoid form. I've actually redesigned chameleaf so it will look different with what I have shown.

      Right now I am thinking of having "evolution" by leveling up.

  9. I'd like to ask some questions and suggestions:
    • It seems that cosmoids have types (elements?) like pokemon but... are they gonna be the same as in pokemon games? I think you could make this game more interesting by giving monsters a base type and letting players add the second one after getting a high enough level, by using item, or maybe by choosing one of many evolutions that add a second type.

    Example: let's say we start a game with a grass Chameleaf. After getting to level 30 (or any other if it works better) we can choose it's second type or decide to make it even more grass-y (for double STAB or something). Depending on the choice the color scheme of that Chameleaf could change a bit. This way hard collectors would have a lot more work with getting all possible combinations and all players would be able to actually customise their creatures a bit.

    • The new cosmoids are a lot more humanlike so... can they use weapons or tools? In and outside of battles?

    • How about making creatures stronger in some way depending on other creatures that are placed around them? It could be done by borrowing STAB (grass cosmo with fire attack could use it with STAB when they're near a fire cosmo) or maybe getting a passive abilities based on types of other creatures around (for example sitting near two wind/flying cosmos and one water could give an ability to ignore 20% of dmg and standing around electric and water adds to attack speed - this kind of combos).

    My suggestion are only suggestions and nothing more so feel free to tell me they're terrible and completely ignore them if you think so, I won't be sad or anything.

      I like the idea of having multiple options for how to "evolve" your cosmoids, I've been thinking a lot about a feature like that and second type could be a way of doing it, I will have to consider it when it comes time to decide what to do, thanks!

      They are definitely capable of using weapons and tools, how that will be implement in the game is still to be determined.

      I also lke your idea of bonuses for having them stay together or near eachother, could be very cool and can be something that only certain cosmoids have or that they all have.

      your first suggestion is a bit like digimon but you could also (like digimon) have multiple cosmoids evolve to a certain cosmoid and there could be multiple evolution stages like:
      fresh to in-training to rookie to champion to ultimate to mega and then you can merge to digimon (or cosmoids in this case) in to a powerful creature such as a legendary cosmoid.
      Fresh could be the egg form, in-training is unevolved, rookie is 1st stage, champion is 2nd stage, ultimate is mega evolution and the other 2 could be even stronger version like a mega x and mega y but after the regular mega evolution and the mega x and ys could be the ones who merge and the mega evolution could be permanent.
      The final feature I suggest is unevolving pokemon such as if charmander and charmeleon are cosmoids and you evolve charmander to charmeleon but you want your charmander back without cathcing or recruiting another one you could degenerate/unevolve the charmeleon to a charmander and all moves a charmander can't learn that charmeleon knows will be removed.

If you're going to make PTD 4 I would love to see pokemon versions diamond and pearl, mega-evolution, Z-moves, the starters either cosmoids or the Sinnoh starters, different varieties of items/pokeballs, characters/gyms/elite 4/champion based on diamond and pearl, and do it like you did in PTD 2!

    2. A better idea than sinnoh is a completely new region with all an option to choose all 21 starters and all pokemon from every region like poochyena pidgey and bunnelby could be on route 1 and roggenrola geodude and noibat could be in the first cave

    7. hey sam just googled that whats the most popular game in the world AND IT WASN'T FORTNITE :I fortnite is 3rd pubg is 2nd and number 1 is LEAGUE OF LEGENDS with 80m players, 27m players a day
      imagine yours being number 1 with 100m+ players a day and at least 1b players in total
      i feels so good but at this rate you'll be number 1 in 2090 to 3010

    just one question: will there be a ptdtrading for cosmoids? and if yes will there be breeding? and a suggestion if both are yes cosmoids could create combos of them being together and the more they breed the better the combos can be and the babies they produce would be stronger or a higher lv at birth.

    4. No problem. The thing you said about breeding seems a bit similiar to the system in Siralim games, especially Siralim II. Both you and mister Otero might find some new inspiration after checking how that game works.

      Short summary:
      In that game you play as a king mage that breeds monsters and goes with them to dungeons. There are many kinds of mosters and they are divided into types (similiar to elements in any other game or pokemon types) and families (for example golems or lizards). When you breed monsters:
      • both parents go away (it's a shame but it's required in that system)
      • the child can be:
      - of a certain species if that combination of parents is on one of many recipes in this game (recipes can look like "monster A + monster B = monster C" or "any monster of family A + monster B = monster C"),
      - of the same species as the first chosen parent if there's no recipe for that.
      • monsters get "gene points" from their parents. They are pretty much points that strengthen one of their stats and the points the monster gets is for the stats their parents had strong. I think they just get all of their parents' gene points too.

      Another great breeding game is Monster Rancher, it's also worth checking if you don't know it.

The reason it is taking long is because I haven't had any time to actually work on anything for a while, most of it has been planning in my head or working with the freelance artist on some character designs. I know you are wanting to see more and I want to give more but we need patience here.

The reason I can work on design is that I just have to send text to the artist, so I can do it while i am at work or doing other things, development I have to sit down on my computer at home which I can't always do, hope that makes sense. Prototype v2 won't be on the next blog post, as I'm changing the design so we are redoing Prototype v1 :D

  17. Sam when you stop working on cosmoids you could make coc(clash of clans) into a pokemon game. Then many people who love both (like me) could
    FINALLY play coc on their desktop with pkmn and eventully it will become more popular than fortnite. Also how are you going to battle: is it like the ptd games or will it be different, I recommend battling like the 1v1 mode in ptd or trainer vs in ptd2.

  27. Based off the art for charmaleaf, i think a lot of people would agree that the creature like graphics look better but the humanoid design is cool, but the manga like style doesn't look too good but maybe the game will bring it all together, either way can't wait!
