Hello everyone, pretty interesting week we had last week. By interesting I mean lacking in any updates. I must admit that I've had a rough last couple of weeks and the whole security update really took a lot out of me. After a few days of clearing my head and relaxing I'm ready to get back on the horse. In my days off I really had a chance to think about a couple of things.
Creature Universe TD - Back to the basics
Do people ever tell you something that triggers something else in your mind? This happens to me quite often. Many times your feedback and suggestions are triggers to other thoughts that help the game grow and evolve over time. In this case Joel, my brother, commented on PTD2 and how complex the game had gotten when compared to PTD1. PTD1 had the element of pick up and play just getting into the action. PTD2 appeals to me because I like to explore and walk around but this comes at a price of having a game that you sit down and play when you have more time. I felt that if I really want to bring CUTD to the mobile market and to save time in development that it would be best to remove the walking around part of the game and stick to a structure similar to PTD1. The focus will then be on making the levels, creatures, attacks, and abilities more interesting to play. Since we already have a Mystery Gift figured out this week the poll will be about which of the two different structures did you like best. PTD1 or PTD2?
Joel & Sam Make Comics
I mentioned Joel just a bit ago, he lives only about an hour away from my house so I see him three to four times a week. We talk a lot about projects, games, and movies. Every once in a while we talk about projects that we can work on together but with running Sam and Dan Games, plus school, plus life, my time is very short. With this project I help up with coming up with funny and interesting ideas for comics that cross over famous video games with famous movies. The first crossover is Hunger Games with Fruit Ninja, and Joel came up with Star Wars with Portal. Check them out and comment on the comic blog with what other crossovers you might want to see. http://joelsamcomic.blogspot.com/
More Limited and Valuable Mystery Gifts
Mystery Gifts are meant to reward players who are following along the development of our games. The first few Mystery Gifts have been regular versions of pokemon that won't show up for a while. These have value in that they won't be available for somebody that didn't get the Mystery Gift but they will be able to get them once the game reaches that stage pretty easily even thought it could be years before that happens. To further increase the value of Mystery Gift the next Mystery Gifts will be shiny version instead! The only major complaint that people have with Mystery Gifts is that since you can enter the code so much there is an over abundance of them. To counter this you will only be able to enter the code once for each account. You will get 3 pairs of male and female so if you wish to trade them later on you will have 2 extra pairs. After this the code will no longer work for your account and yes I know you can make more than one account and get more but I hope that the extra work involve will lower the amount that people get and thus reduce how many are out there and increase their rarity in the future.
Weekly Progress
For PTD2 I'm still working on the items from last week. During my break I remembered the things that I did wrong with PTD1 and the major one was rushing out content to get it out each week. I still like adding things to the game every week (I'm sure you guys wish there was new content every day!) but I want to make sure that what I make lives up to my expectations and a lot of time to get something out in by the deadline I have to cut things down. So what this means is we still get weekly updates but I will make sure that I get things up to the quality that I want to reach instead of rushing things to get them out on time.

ReplyDeleteAh! I was commenting on your brother's comics (I am also Pokekid, never knew why it didn't change). Well, I hope you do what you say and don't rush to get the content out. When you take your time, the levels seem to be a lot better.
ReplyDeletei like the mystery gift idea of 3 males and 3 females for each account.
ReplyDeleteyou're doing a great job, take all the time you need =)
ReplyDeletetake your time sam nobody is rushing you
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with taking your time. Quality over quantity.
ReplyDeleteNew mystery gift stuff is great.
The balance between PTD 1 and PTD 2 is hard to find, because I love the exploration involved in PTD 2, but it feels much more like a pokemon game than a tower defense game. So what it comes down to is what you really want the game to be about: do you want to focus on the strategies of tower defense, or on the sandbox feel of pokemon? I think both games can be really fun, and it's really more of a decision that you as the developer need to decide. I think the poll will lean toward PTD 2 style because people connect with that style much more than the tower defense style, but I don't think that should necessarily alter your vision for the game.
Keep it up, Sam! You keep doing a wonderful job every week, and for that I am extremely grateful.
its a great game sam just want you to know
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for shiny Mystery Gift!
ReplyDeleteFew suggestions/questions:
Could you set keyboard hotkeys for increasing/decreasing wavespeed? Clicking those (+) (-) buttons are so annoying considering how small they are. It would be much easier if we could just hit Q and E to change wave speeds.
Although I love walking around in the open world, it can definitely slow down shiny hunting. I'm hoping you'll be implementing a "Bike" soon to help improve walking around?
u are right but keep up the work sam do everything timothy said
ReplyDeleteMaybe this has been answered somewhere else, but I haven't been able to find it.
ReplyDeleteWill the Pokemon that we have now, but evolve before the Pokedex function is made count in the Pokedex as something we caught? If I let my Chikorita turn into a Bayleef, will I still get credit for having a Chikorita? Or will I need to get another one somehow? I'm too paranoid to let my Pokemon evolve!
And Sam, you're doing a really awesome job! Keep it up :D
i really like the depth you go into when making all of the weekly updates. Its always filled with a decent amount of new information, and addresses alot of what people want/need to hear.
ReplyDeleteI believe Sam has said that it will most likely be that you won't get credit for chikorita if it evolves. I know, it makes me not want to evolve much yet either. So hopefully Sam implements the pokedex soon!
ReplyDeleteOh, man... Am I the only one who thinks Shiny Pokémon are stupid? I'm no longer gonna get them... I can't complain, though, since I'm completely alone on this battle.
ReplyDeleteHe answered someone that the first time after implementing pokedex it will count, but later it will work as it should.
ReplyDeleteTook the words out of my mouth. I like both styles personally. It was hard to pick.
ReplyDeletejust a rarity thing
ReplyDeletehey thanks, I think I would appreciate it if another developer did reveal a lot of information so I make sure I do it :)
ReplyDeleteWhat will happen is that when you first log in after the pokedex is added it will count the evolutions as if you caught them before but every time after that it will only count them if you had them
ReplyDeleteI will implement faster speed pretty soon, and I'll add some hotkeys when I get some time
ReplyDeletehey thanks!
ReplyDeleteAgain:
ReplyDelete- Phanpy is supposed to have a Passho berry 5% of the time.
- In the lead spot, Compoundeyes is supposed to increase the chances of wild Pokemon holding an item.
- Pickup is supposed to give random items when we walk around.
Sam, please change these things. Thank you.
That is the choice I have to make, and for CUTD I'm focusing on the TD part.
ReplyDeletesome people are but it's good to know some aren't :)
ReplyDeletehey thanks!
ReplyDeleteyeah it gives you a decent amount but it doesn't let you just spam it on one account
ReplyDeleteyeah def, I give up a lot of ideas and polish trying to get them out quickly, I wish I had spent more time on ptd1
ReplyDeleteSam's awesomeness is too large to be quantified.
ReplyDeletecompound and pickup probably won't happen for this game, but I'll look into the passho berry and yes I have seen you post this about 2-3 times
ReplyDeleteyou guys are more awesome
ReplyDeleteCan you make them an option for it to be shiny or not? (Mystery Gift)
ReplyDeleteIt is because I am sure there are people (like me) who prefer having a non-shiny mystery gift pokemon than a shiny one...
thank you :3
Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that we should be limited to just 3 males and 3 females per player. As you said, Sam, Mystery Gift is to reward those that play along with developments. I just don't think that 6 is a good choice. While I do think that there should be a cap on how many you get, I think that 6 total is a little less than most people would like. And the reason you make these games is to make us happy. I think that 12 would be a better choice. I don't mean to sound offensive or ungrateful, I just think that those of us who have followed the game's development since it's inception should be given a little bit more. Thank you Sam!
ReplyDeleteHas it in HGSS.
ReplyDeletehttp://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Phanpy_(Pok%C3%A9mon)
Maybe?
6 is enough.
ReplyDeleteI Actually think that it should be less. Like only two pairs. My reasoning for this is because shiny 6 pokemon it will be very easy to find people who are willing to trade and their value will only be worth a regular pokemon.
ReplyDeleteSam...
ReplyDeleteAre you sure you're going to add shinies on Mistery Gifts?
I mean...
Authough it's more valuable for the gift, it will remove the value of a SHINNY pokemon is...
If you look in the pokemon center now,
Every Shinny has a value.. even the shinny pidgeys that are more common then the orders are not "easy ones"...
Normal pokemons for other generations are already rare enough I think (as you told in the post).
Anyway, keep the good work!!
Congratulations! :D
Yes I totally agree with you on this one
ReplyDeleteThat's true...
ReplyDeleteUsing as example the NORMAL staryu from PTD1.
For a long time, it was much rarier then the shinny or shadow ones.
So, just making a shinny right now, it doesn't mean that it's better...
you should continue with normal gifts Sam.
Just my opinion!
Yeah! I think exactly the same!!
ReplyDeleteThanks a bunch :D
ReplyDeleteOh man, do you know how they call "Hunger Games" in Japan?
ReplyDeleteBattle Royale with cheese.
Anyway, I don't think you should remove the walking around part of the game. You know, there are already A LOT of tower defense games out there. Sure, it's easier to pick up and play by having it like in PTD1, but it's less unique, and there's a higher chance that it will get lost amongst the hundreds of tower defense games out there.
Having an open world and being able to walk around is much more interesting, allows you to bond with your character/creature/team more and is just more unique overall.
It's mostly a way to develop it faster since we lack resources and finding "free" resources doesn't really work most of the time. I think having towers stay upgraded and catching the towers adds a lot of uniqueness vs other td games. Plus there will be a couple of new things that ptd doesn't have.

ReplyDelete1/8000
ReplyDeleter HM going to come out? Like fly, surf and those things?
ReplyDeletewhen that deos hapen i will work for hours to get 200 of each the mystery gifts
ReplyDeletelol I like PTD1 more than PTD2 my only reason... PTD1 is mobile friendly and im usually only on my phone. I've just been trading, I actually haven't even started PTD2 (Only chose a starter and that's it) I was hoping that I would be able to move around by clicking like in Avatar Chat in PTD2.
ReplyDeleteYou're obviously an unschooled person. First of all, saying we "voted for Obama" implies that you are racist, and probably of European descent. Second, "poopsicle" isn't a word. It only shows how uncivilized you are. Third, posting in all capitals only make you seem even more uncivilized. Fourth, 15 repeating posts only shows your ignorance. Why bother posting if you don't like PTD2? Fifth, many people here are under 18 and therefore "live with their moms". I believe that you should just get out. I'll even bet your family does't like you.
ReplyDeleteAre you 12?
ReplyDeleteIt will only affect the value of the shiny pokemon for that particular mystery gift. If he releases a shiny sphinx, this will do nothing to the rarity and value of a shiny pidgey. Moreover, I think Sam balances it by limiting the number of shinies that each player can get via mystery gift. Personally I think getting shiny pokemon for mystery gifts would be fun, specifically shiny pokemon that we can't catch for a long time.
ReplyDeleteOn this week's poll...
ReplyDelete1 - Hard to choose between PTD 1 and 2. I like the open world in 2 but I also like the progression of levels and how you can jump back or forward from level to level afterwards in 1. The intro scenes added humor, too.
2 - Also, IDK what your plans for the game but I'd like to see more TD-style battles where you defend candies or berries or something, from a stream of different types of pokemon (not just one kind where you only need 2 or 3 effective pokemon to defeat them).
3 - I like the 1-on-1 battles with wild pokemon. Maybe you could also add 2-on-2 or 3-on-3 battles, that would be fun!
4 - IDK what to think about the shiny Mystery Gift idea. I quite agree with others who said that the value depends on "when" they would appear on the game later on. Limiting it is a good idea though (I say 4 pairs only coz I use all 3 save slots in the game and I'd like an extra pair for trade!). Personally, I prefer regular Lvl-1 pokemon (which is rarer now in PTD1).
5 - Although it turned out great, I did feel some parts of PTD1 were a bit rushed and that you didn't get to fully implement all your ideas. So, yeah, take your time with this one. Don't feel like you have to feed us what we want every single week coz, seriously, just keeping this game free for everyone is enough!
6 - Lastly, you do great work, Sam, and are very generous of your time (no matter what other people say). Thanks a lot.
Ah, my bad, thanks for clarifying (and thanks Sam for clarifying above)! Glad to have that straight :)
ReplyDeleteP.S. Can't wait for the Pokedex!!!!!
ReplyDeleteHey Sam, could you make it possible to select a default item? Like Pokéball x. That'd be really convenient.
ReplyDeleteLol! I suggested that too a while ago but was told (not by Sam) to just use the PAUSE button. But you are right, that would make things more convenient.
ReplyDeleteI understand what you mean. I'm also a programmer and have worked in 3 different games for the Industry.
ReplyDeleteI agree that PTD is very original, and I'm sure Creature Universe will have even better ideas. I wasn't talking about the catching towers part, evolving, moves, etc since I consider those things to be pretty much a staple of the PTD series, I was just talking about the overall "mission style" and that, between both styles (PTD1 mission menus and PTD2 open world), I'd say PTD2 is more original. But if you think that the time you would spend making Creature Universe and open world-ish game is not worth it, then by all means, do it the other way. I will play it anyway and I'm sure everyone else will. It would just be nice to have some sort of mode where you can walk around and stuff. Maybe like, a farm thing where you can just put your monsters and see them walk around and where you can buy decorations and stuff (like the secret bases in the Pokemon games)
Trust me, the one without a life is you. You have no respect to people from what I see. You try and ridicule Sam (one of the best game creators alive). You saying that you hope Sams fiancé will leave him is just shocking from possibly a 10 year old. If you keep acting this way you will never have friends at school or at home. Also you are racist with the "black Obama" thing you posted. 9/10 people who play this game would probably play this game as well. So you 10 year old kid that acts like he is 3, stay off of here and remember take a few steps in someone else's shoes before you say this stuff.
ReplyDeleteSam please not to make the shiny mystery gift yet cause I do not have a computer in like 1week and a half because I am traveling so please thank you
ReplyDeleteYeah it would def be worth the time to add it in but the problem is lack of time/funds to do so.
ReplyDeleteI do have one thing to ask though. Im not sure how others feel about this, but i would rather not know which pokemon you are adding to the game. Whether it is the mystery gift or a new area in the game. This makes something about the game unkown. I like knowing how the mechanics of the game are progressing, but im not sure i want to know the story, the pokemon, or the extra fun things. Maybe im alone in this thought but its just a thought of course :) Keep up the great work
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion ptd2 is great, but since last also a bit boring. i liked the levels on ptd1 more. if you have only a route with wild pokemon its really boring. you should put in more levels like the zai level on route 29, where you have to defend something and also catch all wild pokemon which are in the route. i liked it when a shiny appears and you dont know "hmm is it a hoppip or just a pidgey" xD
ReplyDeleteto sum up i voted for ptd2 in the poll, but mostly routes with wild pokemons is to monoton. in each route you should really put in a level like you did on route 29!
ps: im glad with your decison with the mystery gifts. all reg mystery gifts (ptd1/ptd2) were worthless in my opinion.
Sam!!! do not get sad cause of these pesky hackers trying to scam everybody and complaining after losing their account(s)!!!; you've done what you'd to do, and you are doing a great job!!!; PTD1 was simply amazing and PTD2 is still better (my best dreams can't equal how much good is going to be CUTD if you apply what you've learned in PTD sequels).
ReplyDeleteWhile I play PTD2 I remember when I was a child, time ago, and I crossed Kanto using my GBA and gold edition. I though no other pokemon sequel could be even as good as gold&silver edition, but you've just done something really better, mixing the classic pokemon concept for walking around the map, and the TD formula for combat scenes.
Have u thought of adding something like a mobile, that allow NPC's trainers challenge you, and also allow to chat in-game with real friends previously added in a mobile list??? Thing of that. Every good game is even better if u can play it with your friends
Multiplayer mode, uh? I think it's a bit difficult since it requires more server capacity and not only an upgrade to the game... it would be funny, sure thing, but surely not so easy.
ReplyDeleteWhether u do CUTD PTD1 or PTD2 style, please don't get rid of the behaviors(It is one of the best part of PTD2 in my opinion), or add a better replacement.
ReplyDeleteHow can there be behaviors without a map like ptd2? I Agree with you, its funny to see how they react and that's the reason to have a map part. Someone can say that it was easier to move in ptd1 but i'm sure that when fly HM will be added that problem will be solved too.
ReplyDeleteI'd prefer both shiny and non-shiny.
ReplyDeleteSam, limiting the mystery gifts and making it shiny is a great idea, but maybe you can give both regular and shiny mystery gifts (like 2 codes for one week or the same code gives four pokemon). And I completely agree about taking your time, I don't mind waiting for an update even if it takes weeks, if you haven't completed everything.
ReplyDeleteI would absolutely love to have it levels instead of exploration. Honestly, I haven't played PTD2 much at all since the release or made many videos for this reason.
ReplyDeleteHaven't come across a good idea of behaviors in a TD game, will put up a suggestion once i get a good idea.
ReplyDeleteListen to the poll, Sam! CU will be so much more fun in PTD2 style! Check out your original blog posts about your vision back when it was called ANPO and ask yourself if the vision you articulate there matches the style of a game like PTD1. Take the time you need to develop the game, but don't try and get it out sooner and release an inferior game as a result. A delayed game is eventually good but a bad game is bad forever.
ReplyDeleteYeah but I like ptd2 map a lot more.
ReplyDeleteYou're right, mixed pokémons are better than just one line of a single type. There is no need of a new level, it's sufficient that there is a chance that another pokémon (of the same zone) would appear instead of one of the line.
ReplyDeleteLet me explain better with an example: when you fight a swarm of geodudes, a zubat can replace one of them whit a chance of 25% if you are in Dark Cave but if you are in Route 46 the same geodude can be replaced by a rattata, a spearow, a phanpy or even a jigglypuff (with higher or lower chances depending on the rarity and a total chance of 25%).
Sam, I know this can be a lot of work but I think that's a good idea. You can even make some rare pokémon appear only in that way, maybe also pokémon from the other gold/silver version (like spinarak in silver) or a different time of the day (maybe they're sleepwalkers, ehehe).
Someone knows why today there is a line of !!! roaming on the blog? A group of wild Unown appeared?
ReplyDeleteSame here.
ReplyDeleteI never thought about it that way. It might be nice to try.
ReplyDeleteLol. I remember seeing my first regular Staryu, it was like OMG an ctual regular Staru! (I was over reacting as if I saw a shiny Mewtwo in the wild)
ReplyDeleteAll moves will eventually be out.
ReplyDeleteAll I know is that Disques has been acting a bit strange lately and that might be the cause. I hope it gets fixed soon.
ReplyDeleteExamples of strange behaviors (which most have happened to me)
1.) Logs me out once every few days (or it is just supposed to do that)
2.) Posts a post multiple times instead of once
3.) Shows old posts as new and then they disapeer after refreshing
4.) I delete a post, it appears as a guest post.
5.) a line of !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
He has no computer! THE WORLD MUST STOP!
ReplyDeleteAhaha... I was joking.
Anyway, if you miss the gift you can trade it later, cause also if it's not shiny a true pokémon collector must catch them all!
But if the pokemon has no gender diference (like Gollet, or Tyrogue) will we get 3 of them, or 6?
ReplyDeleteI disagree with you. I usually keep all the stages of pokemon with me (I have Bulbasaur, Ivysaur and Venusaur). Now, with gender "diference" I have to keep one of each gender too. As most pokemon will only have two stages, that gives me a pair to trade, so reducing the number would affect deeply hardcore collectors.
ReplyDeleteIt's not a time problem, cause you can use pokéball-x directly from the menu just holding pressed the mouse and the game will stand still without pressing the pause button. But if the item is memorized it's simply better.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I know it's not a true problem but it's annoying.
Yeah, and if you give a cap to the gift the traders will be asking for ridicolous trades and people who discover the game later will be discouraged from continue playing the game.
ReplyDeleteP.S: Maybe the server needs to be powered up anyway, since it's already overused (sometimes i can't play because of the server overload) and the number of people playing this awesome game can only grow!
ReplyDeleteIt will be hard, everybody know that, but the semi-god Sam will turn the impossible in a child game
ReplyDeleteIt's not a matter of whether PTD 1 or PTD 2 is better. They are two different styles of games. What will make the game good or bad is how well Sam makes it: whether or not the levels are simultaneously fun and challenging, whether or not there is replay value, whether or not the story is engaging, and so forth. Whether it is more TD or more free roam doesn't affect the quality of the game, only the genre. Although some genres are more popular than others, and some people prefer some genres over genres, no one genre is decidedly better than another.
ReplyDeleteI can NOT wait for Pokemon researcher, Daily challenges, Mystery Gift.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you
ReplyDeleteSo do I, but I'm ready 2 give suggestions on both styles:-).
ReplyDeleteSam, to be honest with you I like PTD1 a lot better!
ReplyDeleteThanx can you help me get one male shiny of it juz one offer on y page Darkgamez I really appreciate it thank you
ReplyDeleteSam, what's gonna happen to the map abilities idea u posted in the previous blog if u do CUTD, PTD1 style?
ReplyDeleteI sorta have this feeling too, since I see shiny Mystery Gifts as just nice things to collect and regular Mystery Gifts as things I'm actually meant to use. Making all future Mystery Gifts shinies would make me feel like they're all useless, even if they're pretty nice... So I honestly prefer the current mundane ones.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, giving out two gifts a week seems like two much, even if they're both variations of the same Pokemon. I'd rather rotate between different types of Mystery Gifts.
I think you should keep the free explore layout of PTD2, but make more variety in the swarms of wild pokemon, like in ptd1. not just an army of the same one.
ReplyDeleteFor happiness evolutions couldn't you just code it as every Pokemon killed (or battle participated in) = +1 happiness point to a "happiness experience bar". Then however many happiness points results in an evolution? I feel that this method would be pretty simple to code.
ReplyDeleteAlso, have you ever considered changing the "1v1" section of PTD2 to be the Battle Tower instead? I feel like it would be the perfect place to eventually introduce CPUs such as the Tower Tycoon and allow players to gain points or something to purchase rare Pokemon from a Battle Tower shop. I recall that the Battle Tower in newer versions have a 1v1 battling section and I feel that this would be perfect for your tower defense both in terms of gameplay and adhering to the actual Pokemon games.
I know shiny Zorua is currently an exclusive shiny worth 10 SnD coins but what are you going to do about the other mystery gifts? I hope you don't continue to add 10 SnD coin shinies as PTD1 only has a handful...
While I personally prefer the map-based style of PTD2, I believe that the level-based style of PTD1 is a much better choice if you plan for CUTD to come out as an app. Therefore, as a response to your poll question "Which game structure do you like better?" I answered with PTD2, but I wanted to give my true opinion with an explanation as well.
ReplyDeleteI greatly appreciate the amount of time that you put in to respond to your audience as much as you possibly can, Sam. I've been around since the level cap for PTD1 was 25, and every week I'm amazed with how far you have been able to go with the idea.
I have a question, i named myself Usagi and the one girl keeps calling me bunny. Is that suppose to be like that?
ReplyDeleteWho has a Dophan? NOT PHANPHY!!!!!!!!!!!!! ill trade a shiny rattata, and don't say "Thats not a fair trade" bcuz I think it is
ReplyDeletei ran into thar phanphy problem earlier...
ReplyDeleteY are people complaining about all the gen-5 pokes coming out instead of gen3 or gen4? Because i think Sam said earlier that he'll add the new maps and every poke within it, it will take a long time for Sam to get to Gen5(no offense to Sam) so
ReplyDeleteYeah she nicknames you bunny
ReplyDeleteYeah I agree with you 100%, I like PTD2 style better, which is why I went that way with it. But for CUTD ptd1 makes more sense
ReplyDeleteIt actually isn't a fair trade.
ReplyDeleteThe happiness bit is not really about how easy or how hard it is to code. The way you described it is pretty easy like you said but also pretty plain and might not be something I might want to do. For example you already get levels and experience by battling + chances to get a shiny. Which would also make it easy to achieve. I rather make it a bit harder for those that want to get that can feel more accomplished.
ReplyDeleteThat could possibly be a good idea. 1v1 is under heavy construction at the moment.
Haven't decided what to do with those just yet, not really high on my priority list.
could possibly do this, even tho it the guy you ran into would probably have a much higher chance of showing up
ReplyDeletethey won't show up
ReplyDeleteme neither!
ReplyDeleteSam, I demand a new mystery gift code in PTD 2
ReplyDeleteNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteIf there will be a level cap for receiving gift (I hope not) you must offer something good...
ReplyDeleteThis one is hard for me. I love the exploration in PTD2, but I REALLY miss the simplicity of selecting a level from a list. Replaying levels is super easy and intuitive, while in PTD2 I don't really have a sense of progression. Are the three missions from the girl separate levels, the same level, or a level at all? No idea. Plus, I feel that there are a lack of standard missions. I haven't really had to defend the candy. While the different level objectives are fun, they seem more side-mission-like and I don't feel my old PTD1 skills being tested. Those are my issues with PTD2's style of play. Maybe a mixture might be more effective? Like the exploration could unlock levels or be levels themselves. I don't know, but I feel it's strayed a lot from the PTD1 feel.
ReplyDeleteI got he's point..
ReplyDeleteHe's not talking about one pokemon in particular, but talking about "The Shiny"
I think limiting is just a try to make it balanced...
But it's not difficult creating a new account to make 6 new shiny pokemon, that at this point in the game, are not easy to catch.
I think Sam should read this opinion!!
No shiny as a gift at this point, please Sam!
Hi, bunny.
ReplyDelete"That's not a fair trade" is an euphemism.
ReplyDeleteSimply 'cause "usagi" is the japanese word for bunny.
ReplyDeleteI get your point. But at the same time, it impacts the value of shiny pokémon caught in the wild, don't you think?
ReplyDeleteDon't get me wrong, the game is even better than the first one (which I thought it could never happen), it's just I don't really care for shiny pokémon, not even on the real games.
I said that because I wouldn't mind having the shiny form of many pokemon, but the shiny form of some pokemon are really ugly (like dusclops) if those kind of pokemon will be the mystery gift, I'd want the normal form too. Shiny luxray looks really nice but I think the normal form is awesome too, and I'd rather not miss it.
ReplyDeleteYou mean just like the rock tunnel in PTD1!
ReplyDeleteIt will come if you demand it or not, so please be patient and I hope you enjoy it when the mystery gift comes out.
ReplyDeleteYou are not alone. My guess is even Sam is struggling with this or else he probably wouldn't make the poll. We all like certain parts of PTD1 over PTD2 and visa versa.
ReplyDeleteHow about running into a specific pokemon will result in your 1v1 battle mode, while the old PTD battle mode of random wild pokemon occurs sometimes while walking in the grass, just as in the pokemon games.
ReplyDeleteI forgot to add one (I don't like to sound as if I'm complaining, but I hope the people in charge of Disques see this and correct it)
ReplyDelete6.) Disques is always saying that I have notifications when I don't ( n+1=s (# of notifications I really have = n and # of notifications I see = s))
Sam I am going to point out a BIG SUGGESTION. During the Pokemon battle, when a Pokemon faints, do not make the Pokemon disappear for a time period ( 1.5 sec ) so that people can catch the Pokemon when it faints. This is a MUST needed suggestion. Good work on the game though. Note this down if you can not add it to the working list this week.
ReplyDeleteSam, how are you going to implement the 'Happiness' mechanic into the game? It might be complicated and take a long time so you could either
ReplyDelete1) Create a level at which it evolves
2) Have it evolve after it has won a certain number of battles or traveled with you a certain number of steps
3) Evolve it with a new item.
Just some suggestions, take your time with PTD 2, can't wait to see it when its done.
This would make it way too easy to catch pokemon, and is rather contrary to the way the original games worked... at least in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts on this...PTD2 is currently a grind for levels and shiny spotting and could use more levels than map space to be worked out. Have something to challenge us like you did in PTD1. Adding trainers to some of the maps would be nice or other missions like the Zai one. Also maybe make the Zapdos level able to be repeated? As I see it, add content that isn't on a new map and quality will start to easily improve.
ReplyDeleteThe passion that Sam puts into the game will definitely affect its quality. I suggest you do what I suggested Sam do and look back at the old blog posts about what he wanted to do with ANPO. To me, it sounds like Sam is abandoning those ideas because he doesn't have the time/money to do it, not because he thinks it'll make a better game. I'm urging Sam to not give in because I have faith that he can pull off his original idea, which he's obviously been imagining for a decent chunk of time.
ReplyDeleteWith creature universe, you should make a multiplayer version for pc! I suggest to have the veiw point to be lower than in ptd2 bus not be a platformer. This probably shouldn't be a high priority though... ;)
ReplyDeleteMaybe when fly is implemented you could just "fly" around to levels you've been to. That would solve the problem
ReplyDeletesam, u could do both the styles of gaming.
ReplyDeletefirst u chose a level ptd1 style and then u walk around killing all the enemies.
this way, u get the best of both worlds
a suggestion,
ReplyDeletefirst finish poke-researcher, and upload the game as it is.
bcuz researcher is the option everyone is waiting for.
once u release it, people will get something to play with giving u some time to finish everything else.
i like
ReplyDeleteya try it once
ReplyDeleteya i totally agree
ReplyDeletei cant play it on my tab
TIME FOR A COMMENT POLL FOR CUTD STARTERS' NAME
ReplyDeleteI agree and this could be done by having your computer able to replay these story levels that are unrepeatable. But if things are rushed, I won't get my quality work, so I'll wait patiently while helping out how I can with these posts.
ReplyDeleteI feel like the elephant should be called something that starts with the letter "Z" and sounds strong (for the last evolution). I was thinking Zorro, but I feel like that name belongs to the guy who plays Zorro in the movies Zorro. Maybe Zork (also used as a title for an early video game) or just something short that starts with the letter Z and is not already used (which all my ideas were already used in past movies/games). Sorry, that this was a bit long for just one creature's evolution.
ReplyDeletey cuz u spent like 10 minutes trying to evolve a phanphy? instead of spending a week just wallking around hoping just get one shiny? some people just need to face facts, just because its hard to get ur phanphy levelad up, doesn't make it worth shadow victini
ReplyDeleteDemanding won't take you anywhere...
ReplyDeleteCould you post the link to those posts? I was having trouble finding them earlier.
ReplyDeleteDear Sam,
ReplyDeleteI have a couple suggestions. I think you should make a 1vs1 multiplayer mode but you can use the pokemon you use in story mode; you know pick six to battle with. I think it would be really cool. I also think you should add some running shoes. I mean I like to walk in PTD2 but going from Dark Cave to New Bark Town is kinda slow walking. Anyway those are my suggestions, the game is amazing and keep up the good work!
-MasterQuestion
While I agree with Jordan that it would be too easy, I think I could accept it if this is how higher pokeballs work (but with shorter time periods for balls like great and dive balls, and the full 1.5 for masterball only). Of course, that's only assuming the higher balls are consumables, otherwise it'd still be too easy.
ReplyDeleteI can't be the only one who noticed or cares about this... What do you mean by your time is very short? I'm kind of surprised that most of the comments are squabbling about shiny pokemon rather than concern for one of the coolest indie devs around.
ReplyDeleteI like #3 the best, that would be pretty cool
ReplyDeleteI like the idea that PTD PTD 2 are free to play. I don't see why people rush you, when you can play this game for FREE, not $30-$60. Even if updating is slow sometimes, and you only get 1-2 places per weeks, at least it's free.(ps. the pokemon you buy in the poke center, is your choice, you can still beat the game without them, once he finishes.)
ReplyDeletea lot of stuff to aclompish, keep up the good work!!!
ReplyDeleteCan you make them an option for it to be shiny or not? (Mystery Gift)
ReplyDeleteIt is because I am sure there are people (like me) who prefer having a non-shiny mystery gift pokemon than a shiny one...
thank you :3
*sorry i know that i've already posted this once but I really do hope that there is an option whether the mystery gift can be regular too :)
What if it is a mix of both PTD1 and PTD2, such as the level select screen leading you to the level? There are certain restrictions where you can't go and you need to complete the story in that level to advance to the next level.
ReplyDeletehey Sam i have a small complaint when the play runs in to a wild Pokemon if the player clicks menu it gives the option to exit the battle i kinda think the player souldint be able to just quit like that i don't know it seams like cheating so does getting healed after a battle one of my fav aspects of Pokemon games is the fact that you cant just walk away from a battle fine i don't wanna question your work cuz you are the best but i felt the need to say this
ReplyDeletehttp://samdangames.blogspot.com/2012/02/weekly-progress-lets-talk-ptd-2-and.html
ReplyDeletehttp://samdangames.blogspot.com/2012/03/finished-moving-pokemon-tower-defense.html
Without these ideas that were supposed to be at the core of ANPO, why is Sam making CUTD instead of HTD?
its like running from a fight, not cheating
ReplyDeleteI personally believe that CUTD should be made more in the style of PTD2. Despite the short comings of using this style in both its ability to be played as a mobile app and in its development time, I strongly believe it would be in your best interest to do so. In PTD the select a level style worked fine as the creatures in it were already familiar to the player as was the world itself. From Pokémon we already knew what the behavior of the creatures was like and what the world the creatures lived in was like, but in CUTD we will not and by having them in the PTD2 style this can be overcome as the player can see how they act in the wild and will be able to get a better understanding of the world their character is in. If done in the style of PTD, CUTD could end up lacking the mystique that led to Pokémon's massive success. By having a full world to explore the player grows to understand the world he is in. Until this is established a more simplified version would simply appear lacking in comparison. Imagine how PTD would seem if Pokemon had never existed; the game would still have been plenty of fun, but it would not have seemed the same as the world would really only be known through what was in the cut-scenes. Regardless, my opinion is of little importance as I would most certainly play the game either way and so would many others, but I felt this was an aspect of this decision that you should make sure to consider. Anyways, great job with PTD and PTD2 (so far) and best of luck on the rest of PTD2, CUTD and any other of your future endeavors.
ReplyDeleteP.S. A Mongolian death worm based creature in CUTD could be absolutely amazing due to its wondrous combination of abilities, as the real world myth is of a giant (human sized) worm living in the Mongolian desert that borrows in the ground, secretes acid, spits acid and gives off electricity. If you could put something like that into the game it could be absolutely amazing due to its capability to use electric, earth and toxic attacks (As well as having both physical and non- physical manners of attack). .
Yeah, basically like that. But not in programmed waves, just casually... in that way rare pokémons can show up theirselves but only rarely (with a chance of 1-2% or less) and you're not sure if you'll find them or not when you fight a group of wild pokémons.
ReplyDeleteSam, I was wondering if you would have time to answer a questionnaire. I need it done by early Sunday, but if you can't do it, it is okay. If this is in the way of what you are doing right now, don't let my personal request bother you. Just reply to this post if you can look over the e-mail, I sent you titled "Interview Questionnaire" (which I already sent). And it would also be nice if you could reply when it is finished (if you plan on doing the interview). I put up the other details in the e-mail.
ReplyDeleteI think the bike will be added when we'll arrive in Goldenrod City, like in gold/silver games, but he can surely do it first (it's HIS game, after all). It depends on how he wants to follow the original storyline but frankly I don't care, 'cause I love this game anyway.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Magnephant? ;]
ReplyDeleteThanks for the concern but I just meant that I'm so busy so I have little time left in the day between everything I'm doing now.
ReplyDeleteI don't get the part "9/10 people who play this game would probably play this game as well" did u just repeat urself in the same story? otherwise thise a good reply to that coment. PERFECT
ReplyDeletecool story, mind if a copy+paste it on top? so sam has a higher chance of reading it?
ReplyDeleteNo I don't mind at all.
ReplyDeleteDear Sam, you should be able to take pictures of your screen and save them and then show them off to your friends.( Just an idea.) Also, you should be able to battle your friends.
ReplyDeleteI like that idea, too!
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure about my preference for PTD (as far as open world goes). I think it may not work simply due to the time it takes to create the levels and I'd rather have more levels. That said, the idea of having pokemon visible in the open world and being able to run into the pokemon you want (or avoid the ones you don't want) is absolute genius and is definitely something which I wish they would implement into the actual pokemon games. Having zubat chase you around and geodude hide underground is just an added touch to an already awesome idea.
ReplyDeletei was thinking that cutd should be like a mix between ptd and ptd2 like you have open world and level select kinda thing.. LIke in the open world each town has a portal or something or each place you go to for the level etc and you use that portal to go to other town/levels however you go about doing it
ReplyDeleteafter the 6th shiny can you make it so it give non shiny?
ReplyDeleteHey Sam. One of the things I really like about PTD2 is how involved you have to be. I think I dislike that too. But In 1, I felt like you didn't have to pay any attention to the game to get shiny pokemon. It was way too easy. In 2, if theres a shiny you want, you have to put effort into obtaining it. Also, I think the td rpg fusion is awesome. If you want to make the game accessible in both manners, you should make both methods available. You could make it so that you could use fly to send yourself to certain cities or events that you could redo if you wanted. This could add replayability to the levels, and also just function as the standard fly. I think that what you have of ptd 2 so far is probably the making of the best pokemon game ever. The only thing missing from one was the exploration :)
ReplyDeleteHe's right! You can make that after the limit of shiny gifts you will receive normal ones.
ReplyDeleteI understand the reason why you put a limit to mistery gifts but I hope that when you'll implement the daily care the sons of shiny pokémon will be shiny too.
ReplyDeleteHey, Sam
ReplyDeleteCUTD is not based on any present trademarked character, right?
If yes, will it be an app available on the android market?
If it will, please make it free. You can charge money for SnD coins and stuff.
And do something (like an emulator) for PTD2 and CUTD for it to be playable on touchscreen devices.
Sam, this is awesome!! I can make my Quilava jump on people, take a bath, clmb stuff. go under tree stumps, carry the pokemon lab, go through walls, and even walk on water! I can even make it dance!(croconaw is a better dacer, though.) THIIS IS EPIC!!!
ReplyDeleteSam, don't fix that! PLEASE!!
ReplyDeleteI love playing with my pokemon like that! Best part of the game!( Sort of)
ReplyDeleteMy croconaw is the top dancer! This is my favorite part of the game, too! (sort of)
ReplyDeleteI don't think that Sam will make it free, I don't think SnD coins are a lot of money for Sam.
ReplyDeleteI second it!
ReplyDeleteHow about Zoricorris I think that would be a god name for the elephant
ReplyDeleteSam, i am still having issues loading the game.it freeze at one point.
ReplyDeleteAny suggestions other than clearing cache?
Too many people are playing the game, you can only wait for a less busy time.
ReplyDeleteSome people just like making ridicolous requests.
ReplyDeletehe makes ALL of his money through SnD coins.
ReplyDelete(i dont think he has another job)
huh?
ReplyDeletethanks
ReplyDeleteDear Sam,

-L.S.
So great to play this amazing game again after catching up with most of my work. i have a couple of issues though
ReplyDeletefirst, for some reason, i have a cyndaquil traded from another file on the same account, and it has the moveset of a pidgey. the only other issue was with the adoption center, will that be updated so i can buy stuff for 1 or 5 Snd coins, or do i have to keep buying zoruas and trading them? no rush with either of these btw.
