The End... Until we meet again!

PTD Servers Shutting Down

The end is here.. PTD servers will be shutting down in the next few days and with that PTD (1/2/3) logging in/saving will no longer work.

The reality is that with Flash being disabled on most computers the small player base that was left was cut dramatically and so it cost more to keep the servers running than the game generates via ads/sales.

Another reality is that my own reality and the indie game environment has evolved throughout these years.

When I started PTD, I was a college dropout living in my parent's house. I had a girlfriend and I worked in a warehouse and while things were going okay, I longed to do more with my life to make something that many people would really like and that I could be proud of.

Along the way I meet Dan and we wanted to make games together.. that didn't really work out and we got burnt out after our first release (a game called eTheater). After that I still wanted to make games so I made a small mobile game and then I did PTD. I released it on the Android store (which was a lot smaller and less restrictions) and the game was a overnight hit.

I got kicked out of the Android store but PTD found life in the Web, as Flash game portals were a big thing at the time. I managed to quit my job and spend full time working on PTD and other games.

Along the way I tried to make many original games but never quite found success in that and so I kept coming back to PTD, making PTD2.

While all this was happening, the revenue of flash games was dropping dramatically and each year the game would make about half of what it did the year before. This forced me to get back into the corporate world and get an office job as a Software Developer. (Now don't get me wrong, I LOVE programming so having an office job is something I did enjoy and still do.)

So as the revenue in my games was going down, my success in my Developer career was going up and up.

I got married, some years later I had my son Caleb, I've gotten older and with that the need to create something that people would like and I could be proud of has been fulfilled.

I now need to focus on my family and my career which leave little to no time for making games.

On the subject of indie games I believe the quality of indie has risen a lot! What players expect for games to provide as far as graphics, music, story, features and gameplay is very challenging to create without a robust budget and team. While I can program as good as any of them out there (imo), I do fall short in all these other areas. I digress.

I'm glad we went on this journey together so... until we meet again! And as always.. let me know what you think!

P.S. I worked on one last game that I will release here shortly, a short time travel puzzle game that I hope you all can enjoy as my last present!

I played it when I could, but I couldn’t finish it because I had school and homework. I kinda forgot about you for a couple of years until this was published. This game is a part of my childhood and it saddens me to see it go, but you made your decision. Thank you Sam for building a part of my childhood

  12. it saddens me seeing ptd ending so soon.

while old it still feels as if it were a brand-new creating from god himself.

sadly, this means that it will be hard to impossible to play ptd without a emulator or sketchy site.

it saddens me to the bone

    my dark

    teenage

    edgy

    bone

    that you stopped.
but, might I wish you a excellent rest of your life, I will be hoping you might be able to reopen ptd servers overtime, but I doubt that will happen for awhile if ever.

your games were truly one of the biggest part of my childhood

it is sad 2021, heh, my childhood is dying, from curious george being banned (wtf) looney toons being banned (wtf) dr Seuss being banned (...why) finding out many of my childhood friends died of covid or suicide, so far, 2021 has been worse then hell for me.

    but

    at the very least

    I am glad

that ONE of the biggest part of my childhood gone to a happy ending.

I am not a hugger, I slap people who try to hug me.

I wanna hug you through the screen, sam, but, please, promise me at least two things.

    1) if you are unable to continue the ptd thing with just you and dan, please try to find someone else to carry it on.

    2) have a happy rest of your life.

that is my comment, with every bit of darkness comes light, with every bit of light comes darkness, no matter the person, this will always happen.

have a good rest of your life, Sam

  26. PTD is one of my favorite flash games ever made, and I will cherish my memories even if the game is no longer with us. Unfortunately for me, I was never able to finish any of these games since they were always too hard for me, but I did get pretty far IMO. Can't remember how far I got in PTD1, I think I was somewhere near cinnabar and Blaine. In PTD2 I got to the point you have to time travel and beat the league, but it was too hard. Can't remember where I got to in PTD3 at all, that was unfortunately the most forgettable one out of the three.
Anyway what I was trying to say was: we've loved this game but we understand that it has to come to an end, thanks for everything Sam.

  34. Hey Sam. I don't think I have looked at your blog in 7 or 8 years. I used to look at it nearly everyday when I was a kid. I remember it confused me in school, because you released updates like 1.2.33.5, and I thought that was how decimal places worked in math because of that. I had a lot of memorable moments not just with this game, but with the people around this game. I remember finding it and playing the hell out of it. I would wait for each update to come out, and while waiting would fill my Pokedex completely, as in catch everything available, and shiny hunt while waiting for the next update. I played this game with my older brother a lot. We would trade often, compare Pokemon. It was a lot of fun. I played it with him when we were stuck in a tornado warning at a hotel in St. Louis. I put it down, then came back to it my senior year of high school when a buddy of mine found it. I saw PTD2 was out, and played the hell out of that, this was about three years ago. Thanks Sam.

  35. Thanks for making such amazing games, I remember when Route 8 came out I stayed up all night trying to catch an Eevee. When PTD 2 came out I couldn't believe it, it seriously made my mind explode. I never had much money for anything growing up (I didn't play a Pokémon game legitimately until I was 19) so this was the best I had, and I can safely say I wouldn't change it for the world. It's sad to see this go, but I'm happy I got to be here along the way, thank you thank you thank you. <3

The first time I played it, I just literary created a random name, not an email, and gibberish password cuz I don't know what I'm doing. This causes a huge consequence a few months later when I accidentally logged out! And now I'm unable to log back in. I'm forced to create a new account and them everything went smoothly. It was all fun times I really enjoyed. :'(

samO, it was an honor of you to create PTD1,2,3. I remember meeting you in avatar chat in your Bulbasaur Avatar lol. I swear, avatar chat was kind of mayhem in there especially the m16 era ,the attack of the Satoshi clones, and lots and lots of spammers lmfao.

Ever since PTD2 came out I was actually grinding/hunting a lot for shines/shadows especially in the breeding center. Man good times but exhausting lol.

In the end I made it to the HoF and I want to also thanks to the people who I met in varies chat to help me achieve to be in the HoF. I miss my old buddies and I'm going to miss you too samO.

Let us not forget the time when PTD2 was invaded by a swarm of Bidoofs. Man that was a good April fools joke. lol!!

  53. There isn't enough words and time for me to express all the gratitude I have for you Sam! I've been playing PTD from 2011 when I was 7 years old (this was my first Pokemon Game before Pokemon Black and PTD 2) and remember checking the site every week for the next chapter to be released to play more of this game. I'm now 17 years old (still a Pokémon enthusiast) and have returned to this site several years later to catchup on childhood memories but I'm saddened to see that my childhood game of joy has been stopped. It is hard to see my favourite computer game of all time being discontinued. I wish you all the best in life and your career Sam and I thank you for helping to form part of who I am today - you are a big reason why I still love Pokémon and this game will always be in my heart along with all the grinding I did. Username - (Sero7012 and Sero8012) 😭 when I didn't have an email I used yours to make an account as a kid.

I have now become a monetised YouTuber and it would be a dream come true for the developer of my favourite computer game ever to check out my channel - Kaleido Vids. This is what one of your biggest fans has accomplished.

  54. Wow, I just randomly got in the mood to play Pokemon TD for the first time in a while, and I realized "OH GOD, FLASH DIED MONTHS AGO"

So yeah.. rip, pokemon TD is gone too.

I think it's nice that you let us have a peek into your life situation and I'm glad to hear things are going well for you.

If there is no longer any monetary incentive to run pokemon TD (in fact, there is a negative monetary incentive), do you think you could release the game as a github repo so that we can enjoy your game locally?

I think your work with Pokemon TD would be considered one of the all time greats of internet Flash games, and it deserves to be preserved as piece of internet culture. Over 1000 flash games were preserved and archived before the end of Flash. There's no doubt that Pokemon TD is in the top 1000, in all honesty, it's probably in the top 25 of most important flash games ever produced.

Please don't let your hard work fade away to history.

I was planning to get back to these games, and the online-versions reminded me that the Flash is dead. I found the download files, and got really excited, but now it's impossible to register an account. What a pity!

I won't beg you to bring this back, but please give us a hack to play offline! :c

  60. a decade of memories. thank you both for everything. i just sent an email expressing my gratitude, but i can't even convey the emotions this game shutting down has just warranted. I started it when i was 9 and i'm now 20. Although i will say i didn't play it consistently over the years due to life, i did check back every now and then to play it and level up my pokemon and it's bitter sweet to have seen it through to the end, so again thank you guys so much for this.

  61. This is your legacy, don't end it just because of the flash. I'm from Brazil, and I played over a thousand hours ptd 1, I didn't play the others, I always expected to update ptd 1 even though I knew it was the final version, I had the dream of completing the pokedex, but it was not possible without spending real money, I sent an email asking for a shiny charmander hahaha, anyway I have good memories of my favorite game, every time I came back from school I spent the whole afternoon playing, when I knew the game was going to end until I cried a little, I couldn't say goodbye without leaving my message, I wanted to go back in time, simpler times, live the little moments that don't come back, I remember as if it was yesterday that I found the game, and you were still doing it, I always came back from school excited waiting for the next update, and nothing more it mattered, even suffering bullying for liking pokemons, and I never got discouraged about your game, I even created a tutorial video on how to get the flash, all I have left of your game now are my memories, and you probably won't even will read this message = (

    1. Yes, it's.... a bit hacky though. Go into the official discord ( https://discord.com/invite/S6n6XV3 )

From there, click on "the-return-of-ptd" mod, and it will have the most up to date way to play as a Pinned message.
Currently it looks like running a virtual machine with a FlashPoint version of the game, and freezing the system to basically act as a save system.

As someone who could not afford the games, this was my only adaption to the closest thing. I loved it. The PTD games have brought me so much joy. I am currently preparing to be an adult, although I can't say I'm ready. I hope to create the same spark as you did in me. Thank you Sam, from one Pokemon fan to another. Have a good life.

  102. Man, i gotta say that your games were a big part of my childhood, i spent hours and hours playing the first 2 ptd (the third one i didn't play that much but i still liked it) it was crazy how much time i 've spent trying to beat misty on ptd1 or trying to catch the legendarys that you've put to appear on random pokemon fights on ptd2 (i never been able to do this last one :/ ) but it was aways a pleasure to try again because i loved it, the simplicity of ptd1 or the amazing sense of adventure of ptd2 made me happy for a long time, i aways revisited these games whenever i was missing then, it's just sad how i won't be able to do it again when i miss then from now on because of flash. I just want to thank you for the great job and wish you very luck for your future projects, even if its not related to games, i want you to be even more happy than your games made me back then, bye : )

just wanted to write something to thank you for making part of my childhood, and so many other childhoods as well.

if your goal was to create something that people would like and that you could be proud of, in my eyes you've 100% succeeded. the countless hours i spent on PTD1 and PTD2 as a kid really brings back so many happy memories - from getting my first shiny pikachu to accidentally killing super rare pokemon! i grew up playing your games, and i just turned 18 a while ago. but even as i get older, PTD will always hold a special place in my heart.

so, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for creating PTD.
    until we meet again :)

  122. Gosh... It's quite the shame that Pokemon Tower Defense is shutting down forever... I've been playing since 2011 and was there when Pokemon Tower Defense 2 and 3 first released. I even played the old versions of Cosmoids back when it was a thing! Hearing this really breaks my heart because I had so many Pokemon on there... Shinies, legendaries, legendary shinies... I was even a pro at Trainer Vs and was hoping to continue getting new avatars on there today, especially since I got an android phone recently to play it on, but nope! My childhood just got ripped away from my arms! Still, I think you should consider handing the servers off to someone else and convert it to HTML 5 if you're going to be busy living a married life. I'm pretty sure those who are nostalgic for the franchise will keep it alive, and even a niche crowd is better than none. But until then, good luck raising your family, and happy trails.
