Where can I play?
This update was really big! I added a little bit of everything and I hope you guys can enjoy everything. I wanted to share my thoughts and really kind of explain what's going on.

If you had an account before v3.2 then you won't be able to transfer it anymore to v3.4, you will have to start a new account.

I think the last couple of weeks have been really rough on the game, you guys, and me. It's been rough for everybody. Long security updates, losing accounts, losing pokemon.. many sacrifices have been made for a better future. I want to apologies for any lost progress that you might have experienced.

Now is the time to learn from the mistakes and once again move forward.

Adding temporary pokemon that only lasted a week, while fun for some, was overall not the best experience and did more harm than good. I promise never to give you a pokemon then take it away.

So let's talk a little about the update.

Note: The no whirlwind achievement is bugged, the only way to get it is to beat the level with no whirlwind but only have one candy left.

Level cap up to 42, so you have something to do :), some new attacks for your old pokemon.

From now on all the story levels will have your avatar show up, also you can now earn new avatars from beating the new challenge levels and completing achievements (Note: the new achievements are for the challenge level not the story level). Not only that but you can change your avatar by going to the inventory which takes you to the pokemon center (previously known as the trading center), log in there and click on the profile and you will see a new inventory section. You can even change from boy to girl and back again!

On this level I wanted the pokemon to have a lot of HP so that they would be hard to kill. You really have to use type advantages and everything you can to beat the level. (Note: Thanks to you guys for pointing out the whirlwind bug on this level I will take a look at it.)

This update also introduced HMs Cut and Flash. Both can be used in battle and they will also serve other purposes. Flash will be used to light up dark caves and cut is used to cut down odd looking trees. The new NPC trade pokemon will require Cut to get.

I added new popup boxes when a shiny pokemon shows up. The popup box will stop the game for 3 seconds until it disappears. You can also click the box and it will go away. Achievements have a similar box that will show up. The reason for this box is that before if you completed the achievement and the server was busy you wouldn't get the achievement. Now if the server is busy you will have another chance at saving that achievement. It is also good so that you know if you go the achievement or not.

WILD DOG INFO!!!
  • Dogs are in the wild, a really low chance of getting them on any story level.
  • They will have red health but they won't be shiny.
  • There is no shiny version of them, and there won't be until this game gets a sequel.
  • You will get a popup when they enter the level.
  • You can get multiple, if you happen to be that lucky.

I really hope that you guys enjoy this update, I'll be posting again tomorrow about the next update coming up.
As always let me know what you think.

  1. how do you get both achievements ? i have the mask but whats the second ?

    ReplyDelete
  2. Sam is the shiny rate raised higher then 1/1000 again?

    ReplyDelete
  3. @anon 10:37PM - One achievement just beat the challenge level with more than 1 candy left.

The other achievement is bugged so the only way to get it is to beat the challenge level without whirlwind and with only one candy left.

    ReplyDelete
  4. I know you wont say the number for the dogs but is it less than 1/10000? Also can you get multiple copies of each one?

    Darren

    ReplyDelete
  5. Are the dogs able to be caught?

    ReplyDelete
  6. hey i beat the digletts cave by using my very own roar tactic (kinda like whirlwind) and beat all the waves with one candy left. I DIDNT UNLOCK THE ACHIEVEMENT?! PLEASE EXPLAIN

    ReplyDelete
  7. @Duripen - do you mean lower?

@Darren - The dogs are lower than the original shiny rate so yes and yes to your second question.

    ReplyDelete
  8. @Sam Yea thats what i mean.

    ReplyDelete
  9. how come no pokemon know flash or cut? i checked every pokemon and none of them can learn them

    ReplyDelete
  10. @anon 10:40PM - yup, really low percentage of showing up will have red health just like shiny pokemon.

@anon 10:41PM - CAPS LOCKS ARE COOL... The achievement is for the new challenge level (Vermillion Gym).

    ReplyDelete
  11. @anon 10:43PM - You have to unlock the HMs before they can learn them. Try beating the new story level.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Awesome. Now emails PLEEAASSEE! I lost all my stuff!

    ReplyDelete
  13. Hey Sam,
for the next update could you make it so we can change nicknames of traded pokemon, because i don't really want an ekans named "need sandshrew"?

    ReplyDelete
  14. so, where are the dogs sam?

are there in this update in the first place?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Sam is there a new shiny rate for this update? If so what is it?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Hello Sam, could I request that you fix the bug that makes it so that you can't save after playing the story mode Vermilion Gym, I know that it doesn't happen to some people, but it happens to me and other people too, please fix it, I would be extremely happy of you did.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think there is a bug. The pokemon can drop the candy off on both sides of diglett cave. If this was on purpose sorry for bothering you.

    ReplyDelete
  18. hooray for anonanousness HOORAA

    ReplyDelete
  19. @mater - will get on it.

@anon 10:47PM - Might just have to make a poll for that.

@anon 10:50PM - Yes they have a low chance to show up on any story level.

@tibia - v3.3 had a boosted shiny rate, I lowered it back down for v3.4

@anon 10:53PM - Can you provide more details.

@anon 10:57PM - That is the whirlwind bug that I mentioned in the blog. It has to do with a mistake in the path.

    ReplyDelete
  20. i found out the same problem as Anon 10:57

    ReplyDelete
  21. Bagon:

When I Beat A Level, I Have To Pick The Level And Put My Pokemon Back In All Over Again. Its Fine if you got 5 pokemon, but I got 100+! Maby When Someone Loses, You Can Retry Or Exit. I Think It Would Be Useful.

    ReplyDelete
  22. WILD DOG INFO!!!

Dogs are in the wild, a really low chance of getting them on any story level.

They will have red health but they won't be shiny.

There is no shiny version of them, and there won't be until this game gets a sequel.

You will get a popup when they enter the level.

    ReplyDelete
  23. @Bagon - I'll see what I can do.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Basically, my game saves fine whenever I do anything, except for I play the story mode Vermilion City. I play that level and if I win (or lose even though that happens rarely) and I can't save afterward. When I press save or the auto save activates I get an error message (now in the new update it's something about saving somewhere else). I'm not playing the game anywhere else and I'm not in the trade center, I'm only playing on the blog. I don't know if it applies to all of my profiles because I haven't got that far in my second and third profile.

    (Was anon 10:53 PM)

    ReplyDelete
  25. I beat the challenge by using ROAR and I don't get the achievment.
The achivment says ''defeat the vermillion gym challenge level without usong the move WHIRLWIND'' no 'a move that turns the way of a pokemon' can you explain to me or if it is a bug, fix it

    ReplyDelete
  26. @anon 10:53PM - If you aren't saving anywhere else it usually means you didn't pass the server validation. The only way to not pass server validation is if you are trying to hack.

    ReplyDelete
  27. @anon 11:15PM - Make sure you are playing the challenge mode and not the story mode.

    ReplyDelete
  28. @ Sam Otero I save just fine anywhere else. So I guess there's something wrong with my profile, maybe because some of the Pokemon on it are hacked (I found out that I got some hacked Pokemon from trades).

    ReplyDelete
  29. oh thank you! also I have a question.. do pokemon get exp. when they are used as the 'running' pokemon and not towers?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Thanks for the quick info on the dogs. Love how you say wont be shiny UNTIL the sequel!!!

    Darren

    ReplyDelete
  31. where do u get flash

    ReplyDelete
  32. here at my home blog is version 3.3. Can anyone explain why?

    ReplyDelete
  33. Hey dude, quick question.
In terms of that popup to show the wild dogs, does it pause the game, or is it just to show you?
Plz answer quickly, Cos I'd love to get a Raikou to match my mask!
    Thank you Sam!!

    ReplyDelete
  34. i think the shiny modification has accidentally resulted in no shinys at all rather than back to normal percentages. anyone else confirm?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hey Sam, even though the Shiny popup only happens every so often, could there still be a option to disable it, it gets somewhat annoying after so many times.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I'm feeling really discouraged by this game. Although it is possible to beat these new levels (based on current feedback) it still feels too hard on a personal level. I'm using effective, level 42 pokemon. I have some concept of strategy. But it is not coming together in an enjoyable way. On one hand, I don't want each level to be handed to me on a silver platter. But on the other, I don't want to spend hours agonizing over a level I can't quite beat (with fully trained pokemon). At this point, all of the updates feel a week behind because I have to wait for a modified version of last week's level so that I can actually get through to the next stage. There just needs to be a better balance.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Does the popup pause the game? That's what I'm hoping for.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Now that I've beaten Lt. Surge, I can't help but notice that the waves are really repetitive.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Sam how do u get Tm Flash

    ReplyDelete
  40. Sam is it just me, or does spearow have an INSANE amount of health? Because my Golem's rock blast ko's most other wild regular pokemon, but not spearow

    ReplyDelete
  41. @anon 11:36 I completely agree with you right now because i have been shiny hunting since the update came out and I have not seen a single shiny yet. Unless the shiny rate is changed back to 1/10000 this is prob a bug.

    ReplyDelete
  42. @Anon 11:36
Nope, I caught a shiny diglett and the notification popped up and everything

    ReplyDelete
  43. sam idk if you want to fix the achievement for whirlwind but roar does the same affect and thats how i beat it and completed the challenge

    ReplyDelete
  44. @anon 11:35PM - try clearing your browser's cache.

@ninjutsu - it does pause the game.

@anon 11:36PM - I will say the shiny rate is lower than it was before. That is why you won't be seeing many.

@velocity - In the future finding a shiny will trigger a save so I can't disable the popup.

@anon 11:38PM - I hear you loud and clear, next update expect the story level to be more accessible.

@anon 11:40PM - Yes, for 3 seconds. Or you can click it off.

@anon 11:41PM - You need to HM Cut in a certain level.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Sam can you please tell us the new shiny rate? You can keep the dog rate secret but atleast share that little bit of info with us.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Uhhh... it's really easy to cheat in diglett's cave. Drowzee is the exact speed of a whirlwind's cooldown so you can get one trapped holding a candy and all the waves can walk out then if you can kill that one drowzee that's been walking back and forth...

    ReplyDelete
  47. so the shiny rate didn't go back to what it was did it? (I mean back to 0.1%) how much is it now? cause the only change, we thought, would be the temporary 50% boost then back to the normal

    ReplyDelete
  48. I personally think you should place a level cap on the pokemon that can be retrieved using a code, because I think it makes the game boring when you can beat it so easy with a legendary...

    ReplyDelete
  49. Sam I had an Idea for a level, a daycare level where your first pokemon is the candidate for breeding with a ditto the daycare supplies it could be like say 25 waves but for this said level shiny rate is lessened and the story could be something to do with team rocket making the eggs all hatch too fast and this results in the daycare being attacked by the pokemon you had bred with the ditto so it could be a fun way for getting shiny pokemon for the patient as well as getting red pokemon on blue and vice versa without trading. I'm sure you could improve my idea but this was just the basic gist of it.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Guys, If You want Flash, then teach a pokemon Cut(found in Digglett's Cave) And go to route 2.
Then place the pokemon with cut next to the cut tree, then beat the level. Don't skip the text!
A guy will appear, thank you for cutting the bush, and give you Flash!!!!!
    You're welcome!

    ReplyDelete
  51. LOL the poll results r kinda obvious dont u think?

    ReplyDelete
  52. I've been playing for a couple of hours now, and i still have not seen a single shiny.

    ReplyDelete
  53. At least I hope the dog's level is high on capture. But seriously, The dog ordeal has done so much damage to pokemon TD that you just labeled your self dev scum like the rest. If you want that label removed, you'd best put out more to the game. even frebies will help you.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Did you intend for the cooldown for Meditate to be 18000?

    ReplyDelete
  55. Great update Sam, only thing is on the pop-up for shiny pokemon showing up I don't think a 3 second pop-up is really any different than how it was before. I really think that it should pause the game so that you can realize that it has showed up and can capture it.

    ReplyDelete
  56. All achievements done! =D Were great fun! =D Even with the bug I finaly have my fave mask Entei's ;)

Cheers and good luck for the rest of the ppl that haven't done them yet ;)

    ReplyDelete
  57. Hey Sam I noticed a glitch with Mr. Mime

I don't think that Meditate has a cooldown of 18000.

    Right?

    ReplyDelete
  58. @peter & chenboy - That is the duration not the cooldown.

    ReplyDelete
  59. Oh and Sam, to avoid code (and player) conflicts I suggest you put the no whirlwind AND 1 candy part of the no whirlwind achievement ;) its fun! (and way easier if you can have 2 or 3 instead of worrying with saving one but letting the others go WITHOUT THE ONE run also =P

    Cheers

ps: sorry for double posting but only remembered after

    ReplyDelete
  60. Wow. Talk about spearows on steroids. I have to say Sam, I'm really impressed with this level. This is the first time you've forced me to use whirlwind/roar. Ever. I've never found a need to use it before at all. This was one tough level. No tricks. No brute force. Just playing a game of one-man volleyball with a drowzee/sandshrew. I also like how you hid flash and the npc trade pokemon (though catching the required pokemon was such a pain now that the mystery code for it has been disabled). Thanks for the update. Now to find those dogs!

    ReplyDelete
  61. @SOtero

I Love the update. I am now officially Spearow-ed out lolz. Anyway, Mr. Mime ROCKS!!! (Especially the move Substitute)

BTW Substitute does not appear to remove any of the user's HP.

  62. how do you catch Mr. Mime please be specific? and what are the new moves? because i noticed my Alakazam and Charizard learned a new move at lvl 41 and 42. Please be specific, thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Guys shiny pokemon are not suppose to be easy to find. Sam probably did this because maybe he wanted it to be like the real game its all about luck I haven't found one yet but that also doesn't mean I'll stop and if you think about it Sam did give us a great shiny boost on V 3.3 that was your chance to get as many shinies as possible. Sorry if I sounded a little rude i was just making a point

    ReplyDelete
  64. Additionally, I think that the only way for one to be able to change a nickname if you find the Name Rater, like the original versions (perhaps via use of an HM). This way if you have pokemon "No Dogs Please" you can change it to something more name-like.

    What d'yall think?

    ReplyDelete
  65. Dear Sam, is my account deleted?! I started before v3.2 an I cannot log in!!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Um I'm just wondering dose flash have a use in this current update or not

    ReplyDelete
  67. @anon 1:42AM - It's not deleted since you can use it on earlier version but you won't be able to transfer that over to v3.4

@lightingshad - besides using it in battle not yet.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Hi sam, i ran into 3 different glitches reciently. One may have been the dogs (Oh god, i hope not, i didn't catch one) and the other two are in the new levels. 1st, can't get the achievement, even though i met the requirements. 2nd, dissapering candy on the new level. 3rd, (this may have been the dogs T_T) an "achievement saved" thing poped up randomly on the route 5 level. I then checked my achiements and could recieve more staryus ( i had already collected them all, twice.) hope this helps!

    ReplyDelete
  69. @spikev - 1. read the blog for info on how to get the achievement

    2. known bug

    3. the dogs don't show as achievements, you got one of the shinies from the first achievement.

    ReplyDelete
  70. minor glitch: when i defeated the more than 2 candys achievement, the the NPC said i earned a raikou hat, but i got a suicune hat, the proper one.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Sam can the dogs come in evry level?

    ReplyDelete
  72. You said "There is no shiny version of them, and there won't be until this game gets a sequel." so does this mean there will in fact be a sequel...? If so, that's really exciting.

    ReplyDelete
  73. sam can i use roar on the new challenge level vermillon gym or not

    ReplyDelete
  74. So... accounts made before version 3.2 cannot be transferred over, which means that I've got to start from scratch.

Sam, Is this something that will be happening again in the future? I spent more time than I am proud of getting my gyarados and alakazam, and while I don't mind starting over now that there's a whole lot more content, but I don't see in any point going for guys like these again if I'm just going to have to re-start over when version 5 or whatever comes out in another few months.

    ReplyDelete
  75. its really hard doing the diglett cave even with whirlwind, any suggestions?

    ReplyDelete
  76. @SamOtero
Would be very helpful if the popup lasted forever until it was clicked since some people have something else to do than just wait for it to come e.g watch videos work etc.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Hey Sam,
You should make dogs only possible to use on already beaten levels, otherwise the game will get too easy and therefore boring

    ReplyDelete
  78. sam to be honest, i didn't use type advantages in diglett cave........2 pidgeot with sand attack were enough to win

    ReplyDelete
  79. Does a traded pokemon get any extra Exp boost like in the the real game?

    Cook

    ReplyDelete
  80. The only 3 pokemons that can learn BOTH HMs are Phyduck (not in game), Bulbasaur and Meawth plus their evos.

    ReplyDelete
  81. so the trade pokemon is obviously Abra for Mr. Mime. and Digglet is definitely in the wild.... but what's the second one?

    ReplyDelete
  82. Sam, I don't know whether is a bug or not, but Spearows have a really high level of health. I've injured them more than 300 and continue with a lot of green life bar.

    ReplyDelete
  83. This update rocks! Love how accurate the NPC locations are in the game, along with the HM distribution. Sam, what level will the dogs be?

    ReplyDelete
  84. um two questions
    1. are the dogs already in the game?

    and

    2. i just beat the challenge level without whirlwind (i used roar) is that allowed or do i have to to do it without a move like roar or whirlwind?

    ReplyDelete
  85. okay, soooo. are we supposed to have to pay the 10,000 for learning the HM's too? because we have to earn them... also, how do I get flash? or is that later?

    ReplyDelete
  86. Hey you should make the dogs more common (less common than 1/10000 is pretty lame...). It'd be cool to give them out again via codes BUT make a clause that you must beat a level before you can use a dog in it. That'd be really fair I think.

    ReplyDelete
  87. hey sam when you say accs before 3.2 being made are not transferable to 3.4 does that mean i lost my acc? since i played from the very beginning when the game only had 2 stages? D:

    ReplyDelete
  88. mr mime:
finish new story level and get CUT
go route 2 with an abra
    cut the tree
finish the level (abra must be used)
    dont skip the conversation
    trade abra
    fin!

    ReplyDelete
  89. sam pls add a higher level cap in new update so that is possible to fin the digglett cave without using some special dumb tactics

    ReplyDelete
  90. Sam, can you please clarify something for me and perhaps for many others too.

Initially, the shiny rate was 1/1000 (0,1%) correct?
Then for last week, it got increased to 1/250 (0.4%) correct?

Now, has the shiny rate returned back to 0.1% or is it what some people are saying 1/10000 (0.01%)?
If so wasn't it supposed to return to normal or have you changed your mind?

    ReplyDelete
  91. Sam, you make that much effort and still u didnt think about all "Tricks" ;)

Took me 5 Pokemon with sand attack and one pokemon i want.....i keep about 5 Candy ;)

1st spot the random Pokemon i want and all following spots with sand attackers.

    Eeeaaaaasssyyyy!

    ReplyDelete
  92. BTW; great update. Forgot to say that. Lots of stuff to do!

    ReplyDelete
  93. I have a question. It seems none of my pokemon can learn cut... please help! What pokemon can learn the HM cut? Do you have to buy cut with Pokedollars or what? I'm really confused.... Patar1010

    ReplyDelete
  94. Sam, I just wanted to tell you that beedrill can't use twineedle and fury attack in diglett's cave.

    ReplyDelete
  95. guess u dont want me to post the solution for Digletts Cave cause u didnt post what i wrote....sad, but ok.

    ReplyDelete
  96. For the new challenge level, I used ROAR instead of WHIRLWIND (that means I didn't use whirlwind) but I couldn't get the achievement. One more thing: How do you get flash (all I see is cut)?

    ReplyDelete
  97. sam i put all my pokemon in the pokemon center to see what i could trade for but when i got out and clicked story mode i lost all my money and i have to start over i have all my pokemon but i dont know what to do plzz help

    ReplyDelete
  98. just wondering Sam, is there going to be a 3.4.1 today to fix the whirlwind bugs? i've lost twice at wave 21 for no reason cause of the whirlwind thing.

    ReplyDelete
  99. will someone please trade me a shiny abra. i have alot of my own shinies trade for it too.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Thanks alot sam love your game, hopefully you'll be adding the ghost pokemon soon and adding a legend as part of the story would be epic just an opinion..

    -charizard512

    ReplyDelete
  101. Hmmm... Im glad to see other people have seen shiny pokemon. After 25+ battles of 45 waves each I havent received the notice once. I was beginning to think something happened and shinies werent showing up. I Guess Sam just lowered the rate. At least it will be pretty easy to catch them when they do show up because of the warning though.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Sam,
i think i have got the idea.
You can catch the dogs but it's a very unlikley chance. You have to beat Digglets cave level story mode to unlock the Hm's.Never gonna be a shiny dog until the sequel (if there will be one are you really planning that far ahaed?)and well i think that's it.Oh yea it's ok about the whirlwind bug on the new challenge level.Although i cannot really beat even the story mode level yet arghhhh.Too harddddd.Oh and sam LAST TIME I CHECKED FLASH ASN'T A HM!!!!
-Steve(n)P.s.Lol can you look at peoples profile and their names?????it must be fun.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Hey Sam...
    First: LOVE THE GAME!!!
Second: I think you should put how much xp the pokemon needs to reach the next level becasue it is a pain knowing the xp he gets but not knowing how much more to level...
    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  104. Hey Sam, what do the Entei and Suicune hats do?

    ReplyDelete
  105. sam, i got my achievements, but how can i change my avatar...wanna have my suicune mask!

    ReplyDelete
  106. Lol, it's much easier to beat the challenge without using whirlwind than with, so why is that an achievement??

    ReplyDelete
  107. Sam, i am trying to play 3.3 but it is always stuck at the retrieving your profile screen. Any suggestions??

  108. Do you think you'll ever do a continuos challenge level? complete 25 waves for a minor prize? 50 for a major prize? and 75 for like a fossil or something? it's just a suggestion, it'd be really cool if you did though, i think this is the biggest td game i've ever played! it's really good (insert more possitive yet somewhat unnescasary comment here)

  109. Hello sam. When you release online save for your other games (like HTD or ninja-ja)will you then use the same profiles as we are using for PTD? Because if you do, you could make some thing epic like unlock an avatar for PTD when you do something in ninja-ja, or an achivement system like on x-box 360

  111. Hey Sam, I just recently found a bug with Stealth Rock in which, damage would be based on the first pokemon that steps over it. If the pokemon is weak to Stealth Rock, then all of the other pokemon following it would be weak to it too even if it's actually resistant.

Otherwise I fully support you like many others with the game and I think you're doing an amazing job.

  119. Thanks for the update and all the work you put in it Sam !

Could you please add a "quit" button to the APK version ? (it's hard to quit with the phone "back" button, it keeps saving and I'am afraid it might end up screwing my profile)

Sorry to insist but could you tell me if you'd consider adding later a possibility to play offline or if you just dismiss that option (which is your full right, after all it's your game ;-) but... I'd be delighted if you'd agree to make it available)

  124. short bug report:
it's about the new level. there are two pokemon spots, that don't work properly.
First: spot no. 6 (counted from top-left to bot-right): Pokemon placed here just attack blue-bar pokemon and ignore the common ones with the green bars.
Second: spot no.8: pokemon dont attack at all from here. because out of range.

  125. The new shiny rate is back to the original 1/10,000 I brought it down to 1/1000 due to duping, since it is no longer possible to dupe I brought it back down.

A lot of people are asking questions that I already answered. I won't be posting those questions.

@anon 12:14PM - I'll have to look into that thanks.

  126. It'd be cool to give out the beasts permanently via codes BUT make a clause that you must beat a level before you can use a dog in it. That'd be really fair I think.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Sam, could you make a small change in the trading center?
When you decline a request and still have other offers, could clicking "go back" take you to the other requests for the same pokémon, instead of all the way back to the list with all your pokémon up for trade?

    ReplyDelete
  128. Sam can you confirm whether a Legendary dog has been found yet?

I think you should have a poll on the new shiny rate. It certainly was more fun when the rate was 1/1000. I don't have the time nor energy to hunt for shiny diglett/drowzee at a 1/10000 rate.

    ReplyDelete
  129. So wait let me get this right Sam. Because people could dupe you made it easier for them to get Shiny Pokemon. However now that duping is gone you make it harder for people to get shiny's? That Im sorry to say is the dumbest thing I have seen you say or do thus far.

Also great job on the update loved the new level was a nice challenge. The new pokemon are great. I love how I can now have my psychic pokemon back after the mew have been removed. Diglett is nice,I just dont have much use for him atm. Well keep up the good work, looking forward to todays blog post with news on the new update!

  132. Please change the shiny rate. Maybe not as low as 1/1000, maybe 1/2500 or somewhere around there. 1/10000 is just extremely rare. I did diglett cave for 6 hours and no shiny's... (well, maybe a shiny spearow, I don't know if I dreamt that though...)

Shiny's used to be something that just took dedication(to find a specific one, not like Pidget, which were everywhere it seemed). Now, I feel that it is just extreme luck, more so than the real game(which is 1/8500 or something like that). No one is likely to trade new shiny's now that their almost one-of-a-kind.

if the dogs have an equal chance of appearing on each level doesnt that mean on levels like viridian forest 2 there will be a higher chance since there are more pokemon? Also i dont think the dogs should come on all the levels, for example the kyogre one. also maybe the gym levels shouldnt have them

    ReplyDelete
  143. I emailed you about this, but I'll post it here so everyone can see:

Personally, I really think that making the dogs appear on EVERY level
was a mistake. How about making them appear on every level after
they're "unlocked"? I believe that Raikou is "free", so maybe after
beating Vermillion Gym, he will appear on every level at a low rate?
Same for the other few dogs as well. I also think that it should be
impossible to get 2 or more of the same dog in each profile, so I
think that each dog can only once in each individual profile. Just my
    two cents.

    ReplyDelete
  144. sam i found a glitch......i finished vermillion's challenge with 2 candies AND without using whirlwind(i used sand attack instead) and it only checked the beat vermillion's challenge with 2 candies left....it's kinda hard to accept, since even with the correct strategy, beating the challenge is hard

How do u get pokemon that need to be traded to evolve to evolve plz message back i wanna golem badly

    ReplyDelete
  147. I agree with @Anon 1:15PM. I understand that this game is supposed to be challenging and reflective of the actual Pokemon games... but 1/10000 is incredibly low. I understand in the actual Pokemon games that the ability to trade with people around the world counterbalanced the low shiny rate... but I still feel Pokemon Tower Defense is largely a single player game. I understand that the Pokemon center is still evolving but its difficult to coordinate trades with other players...

I didn't mind the 1/1000 shiny rate. It still took me a few hours to obtain a shiny I wanted and I felt a sense of accomplishment when I found one. 1/10000 would require DAYS maybe WEEKS of searching. I would have to play the same level tens of thousands of time for Pokemon such as Abra or Meowth...

I know Pokemon will always have a probability associated with it... and I don't mind that the dogs have incredibly low chances of appearing but I feel that an aspect of PTD that's purely cosmetic should NOT have that low of a chance of appearing! Would you consider creating a poll for it?

    ReplyDelete
  148. I agree with Marta, it is rather tedious when you have 20+ offers on your shiny ekans and have to delete them all.

It's the same thing with searching. As soon as you search a pokemon, send a trade, and go back you have to restart your search, which makes attempting multiple different offers a lot slower

    ReplyDelete
  149. I registered account in version 3.0 and works fine on 3.4. Maybe it's just coincidence, but I think that this information may be useful.

  150. Can you have a shiny hunt this week only a little late. Like for a shiny Safari Zone pokemon or something (why I say Safari Zone pokemon is because there are so many new pokemon and that level would be the only thing you would get done that week. Also you would have to add Surf, and the Gold Teeth (for strength) I think that update would take you forever if you don't put a couple of pokemon in the updates before it. Isn't Scyther, Pinsar, Tauros, Chansey, etc. enough?

Also with the levels to get Eevee, Hitmonchan or Lee, can you make them into challenge levels because really you don't have to get them.

Also will there be the Silph Co. level in which if you win you get Lapras, because in the games that is how you get Lapras.

Will the Power Plant come very soon or later. Because then you could add Surf in which if you Surf on the Rock Tunnel level (like Cut only it produces a whole 'nother level) in which you can catch a lot of new pokemon and ZAPDOS. That would be SO cool.

Also please add in the next update important missing moves like Dig (For Diglett because if Earthquake sucks Dig should be the bomb ground move), Ice Beam (because really Jynx kind of sucks without a decent Ice move), Discharge (should be like a Flame Burst like move of the Thunder type) because that would help with the Tentacool and Horsea at the gym, Solar Beam (Does 120 damage if Sunny Day is active, normally does 60 like Flamethrower and Hydro Pump), Sunny Day (Duration 1800 cooldown 1200 boosts Fire Moves by 1.5 and Solar Beam's Attack is double), Hail (boosts Ice moves 1.5, hurts all non Ice pokemon Duration 180 cooldown 240), and since you already have the animation for Blizzard, Thunder, and Fire Blast why not add them for the price of normal tm's x10. They are THAT good.

Out of all this stuff I would mainly add the tm's. What would be a good progress list this week would be some of those moves, and MAYBE a new story level (with one or two new pokemon). That would be a great week.

    Great Game!

    ReplyDelete
  151. Yeah, if you could get it to automatically catch the shinys for me, and fix me lunch, that would be great. How about adding some sparklies too? All these new levels are way to hard, you have to like think about it for minutes at a time and try two or even three times to get it to work. The latest level is so hard, that here I am a day later with flash, cut, Marcel up for trade and am still working on getting my Dugtrios and Hypnos to 42nd level. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  152. Sam the shiny rates need to be more reasonable. I remember awhile back when you said "hack if you want, here is the link. I'll make the shiny rate back to 1/10000 when multiplayer comes." A few months later, the shiny rate is now back here, and no multiplayer. I could understand shinies needing to be rare in multiplayer and would be perfectly satisfied with getting a shiny pidgey or zubat. But in normal gameplay, myself and all the other shiny hunters just want to collect em all and enjoy having the different shinies. 1/1000 was just fine but 1/2500 would still be doable, leaving shinies rare but giving us a chance to catch the ones we want. If the 1/10000 lands on a shiny pidgey per say, its pointless since it was a code shiny and is very common. The shinies is one of the main reasons I play this game. Everything else in the update worked out great though. Just my two cents.

  153. "No one is likely to trade new shiny's now that their almost one-of-a-kind." have to totally agree that is the worst part, even worse then the getting them part

By the way, the original shiny rate is 1/8192, and there was another thing attached to it. you could search more specifically for 1 poke, for instance if you were fishing with an old rod... you know =P

Now that i know the shiny is back to the hardcore rate and the dogs are "less then the shiny" with no value to tell I really hope we know someday the real rate =P

  154. Sam,
I completed the original Vermillion challenge to keep a dog... which I no longer have? You removed them all? So now I don't get one... I don't really care that much but I just wanted to make sure if I was supposed to have it or not...

    ReplyDelete
  155. Shinies are supposed to be really rare, I think you guys really enjoy just having things handed to you in a silver platter which is fine and dandy until you get everything you need in the game and it becomes boring because there is nothing else to find.

@anon 2:58PM - Over 200,000 people got to transfer their account, I had it up for 3 weeks before I closed it down due to exploits. Everybody who was keeping up with the game had a fair chance to transfer their accounts but that time has passed.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Hey Sam, long time no see. My computer got fried while I was away for a week, and I had to go several weeks without playing your game, or doing anything on the net, for that matter haha.

I just got a new laptop and got it up and running this morning, and it's not letting me import my account. Disturbed, I checked your blog for any similar problems reported, and found this little nugget:

"If you had an account before v3.2 then you won't be able to transfer it anymore to v3.4, you will have to start a new account."

I'm sorry, but what the hell? Is it because of a technical change? Is this permanent?

I could even get over that, maybe, in time, but now that I've started a new account and said goodbye to my dozens of hours of hard work and beloved Pokes, it's not even letting me.

When I started a new account (on this website, using Google Chrome) and went to OK after entering my name, it behaved as if I had clicked Cancel- sent me right back to the 'New Game' screen.

I've tried clearing my browsing data, using a different browser, downloading the .exe for the game, and everything inbetween.

So from my point of view, it's as if I'm having all of my shit thrown into the furnace for having been with this game from the beginning, and then being turned away at the door.

Please tell me you have a solution for this Sam, because I really don't want to part ways with this game.

  159. Sam if you think 1/1000 far to easy, then why not even 1/2500 or 1/5000. I'd be happy with that, but with the current rate, like someone said, it will take hours upon hours of searching for a specific shiny, and it's not like there's more than 4 or 5 shiny diglett's on the trade center.

  167. @anon 5:03PM - I'm posting something on it today.

    ReplyDelete
  168. Hey Sam,
Part of the reason why most of us want a lower shiny rate is exactly what you said... we're lazy and enjoy being handed things... but I don't think that encompasses everything.

I have never complained about the difficulty of any new levels or challenge modes because I understand that you take great care in making sure they are DOABLE. Also, what fun would a game be if everything was easy? I enjoy the challenges you provide!

However, playing the same level over and over again is NOT a challenge and it is NOT enjoyable. It's just busy work. If the shiny rate was lower, I would be willing to put in the time to catch a shiny because statistically I will eventually get the shiny I want sooner rather than later. If the shiny rate is 1/10000... for Abra which has a rate of 4/100 on the Cerulean Gym level and 1/100 on Route 5, the chances of me catching a shiny Abra are 1/1000000... I would have to go through roughly a MILLION Pokemon on Route 5 before I saw a shiny Abra.

I want to make an analogy to try to express how boring catching shiny Pokemon is with a rate of 1/10000. The new levels and the new challenge modes you put out are like trying to overcome a new difficult opponent in tennis. It takes strategy, a lot of practice, some patience and self-control but in the end, it is very rewarding and very doable with enough skill.

And if new levels and challenges are like defeating a difficult opponent... trying to catch a shiny Pokemon at the shiny rate of 1/10000 is like watching a tennis ball bounce 1,000,000 times. It's time consuming, pointless and just plain boring.

I understand why you may want to make shiny Pokemon really rare and if you want to keep it at 1/10000 then I'll just stop caring about shinies (interesting note: that would actually make me spend LESS time playing PTD because I did actually input a lot of time trying to catch shinies when they were 1/1000). I really enjoy playing PTD and I do spend A LOT of time playing... but I'm a 21 year old full time student working 50 hours a week at an internship this summer. Just as a selfish desire, it'd be nice if I could enjoy the pleasure of having blinged out Pokemon without having to spend an UNFATHOMABLE amount of time playing this game. =)

P.S. Great job with the update this week by the way. =D

    ReplyDelete
  170. @Jason - I must say you really bring up great points. I'm really enjoy a good logical debate and you hit a lot of good points besides I want easy things. I will see what I can do about making shines hard to get but not completely luck based.

    ReplyDelete
  171. @anon 5:13PM - I'll be making a poll about the popup soon.

    ReplyDelete
  172. How low is the shiny rate now? I've been playing Route 5 about 7 times without finding any.
Just when I fixed my can't-find-any-shiny-problem...

But hey, someone just offered a shiny Ivysaur for one of my diglett. I am so happy!

    ReplyDelete
  173. Well said Jason

@Sam One reason why shinies are such a problem is because it just got 40 times harder to find one so I'm sure we'll get used to it soon! However some suggestions I have to find some middle ground between the silver platter and overly time consuming is either a rate of 1/2500 or 1/5000, or having items or secret ways to get shinies more easily. Being a certain avatar or bringing pokemon to a certain level could increase the rate of appearing for certain pokemon. Something cool about the pokemon games were the tricks to get shinies like chaining in gen 4 and the international breeding method in gen 4 and 5. Adding up the total rare candies saved over levels and being able to exchange them for a shiny rate increase could be another way. I'm sure you have many ideas and will come up with a great solution like you usually do.

    Darren

    ReplyDelete
  174. Hey I just thought maybe you can add a special room only accessable by dig in the future and to get to it you need to solve something kind of like a treasure hunt to find the people who know where it is then piece the clues together to find the location and the exact spot your pokemon needs to di at and if you beat the level it will say your pokemon found a secret entrance when using dig in battle. Maybe you can move the dogs there and make a super hard 100 wave level and only allow certain pokemon to be used (like certain types or size pokemon) and it would be way awesome if there's something like that!

    ReplyDelete
  175. Sam, along with what Jason is saying, why don't you just go with how the original game has it?

In the original game, the rate of finding shiny is 8/65536 or 1/8192 (see http://www.psypokes.com/lab/shiny.php). (I really think you should make it 1/8192 instead of 1/10000)

However, in generation IV and on, you can chain up to 40 of the same pokemon and increase the chance of finding a shiny pokemon from 1/8192 to 1/200. Obviously, the chaining method wouldn't work in this game as it's different in nature, but a similar concept made for this game could work. This will make it less luck base and you can work for it. However, the new chaining method for PTD will have to be very challenging (mistakes will cause the chain to reset, you should show a chain counter for the specific pokemon). Conceptually, this might work, but I haven't come up with a good chaining method for this game, but just like to share this idea with you.

A question about the shinys, besides the visual appeal/bragging rights of shinys, the only advantage of having one over normal pokemon is only 50% exp increase per kill right?

BTW, I'm curious as to how the stats for the pokemon work currently (I understand you plan on having the stats display in a later update). The stats are just based on base stats for each level right? (I really don't hope you put IVs into this game as that's just luck base and that doesn't belong in a more strategic game nor will you put in EVs in this game right?). I just want to check to see if the stats are just based on base stats (which I'll be happy with).

    Your Fan,
    Jack

  182. Great game Sam, and you're doing a good job with the updates. But one thing is starting to bug me.
There is no sort button in the pokemon list, and as you know the number of pokemon is increasing quite fast, so it is getting a bit difficult to choose the six that you really want. You could for example do a sort button:
    -shiny, not shiny
    -lvl higher-lower, lower-higher
    -type of pokemon fire,water,ect.

I know it's a minor disadvantage but you could look into this in the future updates

  183. Out of curiosity, what level are the dogs when you find them? 55, or the regular level?

  184. In my opinion, there are a couple of fundamental differences between the way you use shiny Pokemon and the way the Pokemon games use shiny Pokemon. Most of the differences stem from the fact that you incentivize the capture of shiny Pokemon, both tacitly and overtly.

You encourage this overtly by offering these as common rewards (e.g. rewards for achievements). This means that players are going to naturally see shiny Pokemon as something to expect. You encourage it tacitly by making shiny Pokemon the most expeditious means of leveling - they have actual in-game benefits, so there's a good reason for wanting them.

You also make your shiny Pokemon much more attainable than they are in the original game. It's much easier to write off shinies as a player in Pokemon games, since you only encounter one Pokemon at a time - through the duration of the game, which is many hours long, you'll be lucky if you see a single shiny. Your game is relatively short (and would be even in its full form, since it has no exploration component), and it's almost a guarantee that you'll see at least one shiny Pokemon due to the sheer volume of Pokemon you see per time period.

Like one other poster alludes to above, the rate of appearance would work well going in either direction from where it is now - it's currently in a sweet spot of "less-than-optimal." It would work much better if:

    a) The shiny rate were higher. Continue to encourage the use of shinies, but make it logically attainable for someone to get all of them. If there's enough incentive to get them all as shinies (e.g. "I already have one from a contest; I need more" or "these give me experience bonuses"), then they'll invest the time if it feels attainable.

    b) The shiny rate were lower. Remove the incentive to have shinies from a gameplay perspective (e.g. something aesthetic only) and make shinies very difficult to get. Then they can serve as status symbol, but you're not making your players feel like they're missing out.

The Pokemon games choose (b), which is valid, but I think you have an opportunity to really branch out with your game if you take the path down (a). You could further incentivize the use of shiny Pokemon (maybe each shiny can learn an attack its regular version couldn't get) and make it feel possible for regular players to get lots of shinies. You get a chance to double-dip in the "collect-em-all" reinforcement system that the Pokemon games use so well - once for the Pokemon, and once for their "upgraded" shiny versions.

  185. @Peter - Another well thought out post, I will be looking at what exactly I will do about gathering shines. What I'm thinking of this very moment is to leave the low percentage randomness in for surprising moments but also provide an clear hard but feasible method on getting a shiny that you want.

  186. Hi Sam i have one question what we need all the money for? I'm playing for a while in PTD and I have almoust 1 million pokemon money. Are you planning some major market upgrade or what?

  187. @anon 7:31PM - Great question, a lot of people have been wondering that since forever. The only problem is people have been requesting big prizes for the money. But since money is easy to get I can't really give huge prizes for money. I'm thinking a high costing rare candy might be a good start. What do you guys think?

  188. @Sam- Rare Candy is a good start I would like to see that. However I would like to see new pokeballs integrated in the game.

    Thanks for the game!

    -Cody

PS in the original games didnt you need cut to get to the amber fossil in Pewter City?

  189. @Sam, when is the update list coming out? I am curious much.

P.S. The rare candy idea is awesome!!!!!!!

  190. maybe we could buy better pokemon balls to catch bigger pokemon (those withe the blue hp bar)
And about the costly candy what it would be for

I should write the question and ideas in one post. oh well

  191. I think you should add a REALLY EXPENSIVE Lucky Egg for starters or make the money used for the Game Corner once Celadon City is released.
Also I usually would agree with the poll ideas but I think ability to nickname nicknamed pokemon would be bringing it too far! Ability to nickname traded pokemon would be like ability to change the pokemon trainer ID in the games. What I think is best is that you give about a week for us to rename badly named pokemon and then give us the ability to write a message on the pokemon you want to trade so when others click on it they will know what to or not to trade and it will prevent you from getting pokemon with bad nicknames.

  192. Good update, reducing the shiny rate back to 1/10000. Although every single shiny that I've found have been a Pidgey.... Perhaps my luck will change eventually. Keep up the good work Sam!

  193. I think you should add Happiness to the game so it'll increase when you use the pokemon and decrease when it faints with a maximum level of 255 then change the trade and inventory buttons into a Pokemon Center button then add a Happiness Checker there. Then you should add a really expensive item around $5 million called the "Heart of Joy" that can only be used on pokemon with max happiness and has a percentage of turning it shiny depending on it's rarity in the wild. Or you can differ the cost depending on it's rarity instead.

  194. OMG i love how so many pokemon learn moves at either level 41 or 42! and i have a question um can moves miss because in the games they could miss. or is it just like you have to deal with the cooldown time instead? also pretty soon pokemon are going to learn like thunder and blizzard and fireblast will they be able to miss or will they just have a cooldown time like whirlwind? because if they dont do either then that is going to be extremely unfair for the people who A. dont have a pokemon trained that can learn that move. or B. basically dont use raw powerful pokemon but have weaker pokemon with like whirlkwind or even like sand attack?
