Hero Tower Defense Thursday: Day 17 - Community Request: Game Mechanic

Go here to read the Day 16 of Hero Tower Defense Thursday.

So for this post I'm going to take a small break from posting a game progress update in order to ask you guys a question.

We definitely have a lot of ideas for HTD and you guys have given us a lot of help with those ideas. You've also given us some great new ideas as well. This is all very helpful to us and even though the first version of the game will basically be at the prototype, pre-alpha, v0.01 stage in development we look forward to hearing your feedback on that as well. This will just help us a lot because you'll be able to get your hands on it and tell us what you like or dislike right from the beginning while the game is still wide open for changes.

This is all to say that your comments, suggestions, ideas, and feedback in general is very useful to us. In a past post I asked what game references you guys might like to see in the game and I found those suggestions to be quite helpful and ended up with a large list of good suggestions. So I wanted to call upon our fans again and ask you guys to think of some game mechanics that either you've thought of yourself or you've seen elsewhere and then pick one that you'd really like to see in HTD. For example, something like siege weapons that you can build and place like towers or maybe housing for your characters, etc. Just try to limit it to one suggestion though because I know a lot of you have a bunch of ideas but give me the one game mechanic you want the most. Also try to think about how it'll work in HTD's TD/RPG gameplay. It's ok if it's already been mentioned before because nothing is 100% at this point and things can always change. Plus, if lots of people want the same thing then this will let us know.

So let us hear your suggestion/idea for your most wanted game mechanic in the comments. I look forward to reading your responses! Also, Kevin has a new poll up on his blog, KXN @ HTD for choosing Male Hairstyles so head over there and cast your vote!

  1. Well, I thought of something today... whilst in the shower of all places. :P

Whether you only have one tower in a particular map or if all other towers have been destroyed due to the feature that towers can be attacked, you can use a skill called "Adrenaline" where you attack 15-25% faster. It makes sense as if you are defending a tower or venturing alone, your senses and reaction might be a little faster so you could respond quicker.

Well, that's my idea. :) Don't know if it's actually feasible.

  2. Maybe you could place building that allow people to use special moves-eg. a shrine to hades could allow him to summon a meteor or a shrine to zeus could summon a lightning bolt. Well thats my idea.LOVE YOUR BLOG!

ps. still hoping for an x-mas release 8D

  3. Like above but if you have an archer unit you could garrison it inside an archer tower to increase damage and rate of fire or for siege towers put melee units in it

  4. I would like it if this game functions in a village, like you could use money to improve the village, and their could be blacksmiths who improve your weapons and stuff. Its pretty much a ¨between the levels¨ stage thingy.

  5. Perhaps you could have weather conditions that arrive after a certain number of waves pass. For example, you could have a scenario where one of your mages predicts that it will rain in a bit and that you should prepare accordingly.

There's also the idea of allied units, stage gimmicks like boulders rolling down at you, strong winds affects your accuracy, lava rocks being dropped on your heads, etc.

  6. Not sure I really understood your request but I'd resuggest the invasions events, once in a while, with some exclusive loot (including pets =P), and with loads of waves. If you want all the idea I can go thro the weeks before and repost it here later.

(I know you asked just 1/person but since there are already posts without ideas... =P) Pet stables, for the dmg dealing pets (like wow), so we can have the number of pets in combat we'd normally would BUT can go after more and have them back at the stable and switch em etc. ;)

  7. how about ... you build on towers so you could buy a tower like a platform and when you go on it, it increases the range of your tower

    ReplyDelete
  8. make a clan systen like Final Fantasy Tactics series ,with the player can inprove the clan building ,train the normal soldier to another classes ,train the pet, upgrade blacksmith tools to make beter weapons and etc

  9. Traps! Not just road spikes, but traps with all kinds of effects like fx one that can push/throw stuff into the lava :D

  10. i have an idea.

an effect you can unlock called Last ditch effort.

when a tower is lower then 10% health, it unlocks a special attack/buff for that specific type of tower.

another idea, is an award you can receive in each map called give no quarter, requirements, no tower can lose more then 90% of its health. award effect would give a new set of armor/hair style, just for show.

  11. The ability to replay levels as to get more loot, and a big upgrade selection with the ability to get them all (so its not like this OR this) 'cause I love upgrades!)

  12. shrines to the olympen gods so you call upon them to help you.

  14. Have you ever played Dark Cloud/ Dark Chronicle? They are two games for PS2 that have something I loved. An iteresting way to upgrade weapons and get new ones. It was like this:

Weapons (and for HTD, armor and other items too) can be leveled up. When you do, the Attack power or some other stat increases a little, and that weapon gains fusion points.

All items can be turned into balls of energy that can be fused with a weapon, wasting fusion points. These fusions increase a bit the stats of said weapons.

For example, a fire shield gets turned into one of these energy balls. You lose that item forever, but the ball of energy has the attributes Fire+2 and Defense+1, so when you fuse it with a sword, that sword will make +2 damage to enemies weak against fire, and also increase by 1 your defense.

When a weapon has the right stats high, it can be upgraded to a stronger weapon. A weapon can be upgraded into different other weapons depending on which stats does it have.

  15. I really want the "group" and "guild" options for raiding and such like pve, and maybe pvp, but something for me and my friends to do as a team

  16. perhaps make the game a kind of fire emblem feel with the map from sacred stones, as its not that complex but pretty effective and it would probably fit the game.

i agree with the up gradable village thing or something along those lines, like in assassins creed to with the little town you can upgrade, but maybe your house that as you get stronger you get people who come to you and ask you for protection and in exchange they will help upgrade your house and build themselves one. which they may or may not open business like a blacksmith or a spell shop ( skyrims got me in the mood lol)

so eventually there would be a little village or a town forming as you grow in strength or fame which of course would not happen for a little while, in the game or maybe or perhaps your first quest will involve doing something for a guy who will build you a house in a convient open field lol and then open like a sawmill or something so you can make arrows or other stuff.

    - Jord1207/Weedle

-ps. blame skyrim for my mind being overloaded

  17. i have a couple suggestions:

-melee characters have posts or barracks that they spawn from. the units come out of the tower and onto the road. if you click on the barrack you can chose a rally point for where the units stand.

-enemies have behaviors such as some mob up on units on the road or some run past if the units are occupied.

-range units stand in towers off the road and can be killed while up there by some enemies, so you'll have to buy more archers to fill the tower.

-you get hero units, like your character and companions you meet, and your hero can be a newly ranked general of an army after in the tutorial his/her general is captured.

-hero unit, depending on their style, can be placed around the field and are a lot strong then your normal units.

  18. co-op online! like if you have a tower limit like ptd lets say 2, then each person gets one tower and you will both try to beat the level together!

    ReplyDelete
  19. you get points for killing monsters so you can upgrade weapons

    ReplyDelete
  20. Can you please make the "newbie gear" not like in most RPGs? not all of bad leather(armor) or rusty(weapons).I mean,in the beggining,we are newbies, but we deserve some honor. :3

  21. I second what WolfieXp said, it would be great to have like a central village or tower, like a head quarters, that one could advance as one progressed throughout the game. It would be very nice to see!

    ReplyDelete
  22. You should have the ability to take your guy off the tower and have him go salvage materials.
Something like that, maybe get thing monsters dropped.

    ReplyDelete
  23. What about some smaller siege weapons being able to be used like weapons, kind of like the ballistae in Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon

    ReplyDelete
  24. How about some wolves for pets. Or bears or tigers. And how about being able to recruit a few monsters that could be different classes than normal, like werewolves, skeletons, vampires, zombies, ect. This might be a bit much but I was exploding with some ideas a bit.
With the pets I would say the wolf would be fast and have high attack with a low defense.
Bears would have high defense and attack but low speed.
Tigers would be relatively balanced, maybe with a slightly above average speed and a slightly below average defense.

  25. i agree with the clan system from the final fantasy tactics seris to change classe and thing sam if you make the classe based ,in the classes in final fantasy tactics the game will be awesome.
and you can make a world map similar to Final Fantasy tatics series too.

    ReplyDelete
  26. You're doing a great job Kevin and I can't wait to do just the first wave! -Pat

  27. I agree with the clan system from the final fantasy tactics. It would be awesome if they can change classes like from archer to swordsman

    ReplyDelete
  28. I think a good thing to include that many good TD/RPG games have is a preloader

    ReplyDelete
  29. Stealing from opponents... Began able to take extra items from enemies. Stealth/Ambush...being able to attack your enemies without them seeing you first (helps people who want daggers, me, to get more of a fair chance), can be a percentage of success, or if one sees you fighting they can fight too. NO GUNS!!!! That is like saying that Mid-evil knights would have any chance in the modern day. THEY DON'T GO TOGETHER!!!

  30. what about assist chararacters?let me explain.after defeating a certain amount of enemies,in the bottom left or right corner would blick and you click on it.it will randomly select an animal or a hero and they will have a certain weapon that does less damage than your character.you start off with one or two assist characters, you can also buy more assist characters later on that are more powerful or help you more.some assist may not do damage, but help you out in a different way.thanks,pokemasterlvl00

  31. A couple things I'd really like to see are:
    1) Hidden goodies, be it a bonus map for beating a level in a certain way, or maybe a way to trigger a map to be more difficult by opening another entrance for monsters to come at ya. Or even hidden treasure off the beaten path.

    2) Lots of Archetypes to pick from, maybe even prestige classes to branch from, so a wizard could go into Archwizard or Necromancer or something!

    3) Boss battles that switch up the game play a little, maybe the strategy that works on normal mobs doesn't work so well on the bosses, or even powers him up. Maybe you can only attack them from behind due to the awesome Zombie King's enormous shield.

  32. The best TD game I've ever played was a WCIII custom game called elemental tower defense. borrow elements from that game and you're golden.

    ReplyDelete
  33. i say the game should get some mechanics based off of kingdom rush, a game by ironhide studios. the game was really success full and had very unique features that you dont really find much in tower defense games.

  34. @bobthelawyer
Even if guns are added, they don't have to be modern day ones. The first guns/cannons had horrible accuracy and were just as likely to blow up in your face as they were they were to fire correctly.

    ReplyDelete
  35. @Anonymous
Once you have guns, people want to be able to upgrade. I would want to upgrade on daggers, bow and arrows and such. I think people would be upset if their guns would blow up in their faces. I think they would not be satisfied. Those guns could still do more damage when fired correctly than Bow and Arrows. People would protest until they could have guns more accurate and faster to reload. I like the gun idea, and I understand what your saying, but it just wouldn't satisfy others. It is all or nothing. Once you have all, who says arrows are any good? Sure you can give them some advantages, but nobody has a bow to protect myself, they have guns (not that I approve of this) to defend themselves. It just wouldn't seem 'believable' (if you will) to have people pick a bow and arrow over a modern gun to fight in a war.
Make agility helpful for those who chose to go armorless (ROUGES AND ARCHERS!).

    ReplyDelete
  36. @anon 6:31 that not true its just a myth they were proven to be accurate at ~150 yards for the rifles. But anyway definately a dual wielding mechanic! I want to be able to create a rogue type dual wielding character or a heavy tank type character depending on my mood so a dual wielding mechanic would be awsome. Also perhaps a weapon enhancement system similar to the dark cloud series?

  37. Awesome ideas guys! We'll probably end up using several of these ideas that you guys suggested. Some of the more complex ideas might take some time before we get to implement them but would certainly be worth it.

It's also really nice to see that some of the ideas mentioned here have also been tossed around internally in the past. This tells us that we're on the right track.

Thanks for the ideas guys! If you see something similar to your idea make it into the game you can be certain that you helped influence that decision. We'll probably be doing more of these Community Requests throughout HTD's development, both times so far have been very helpful!

  38. Sam there is a bug in the Multiplayer mode when you put a pokemon and quickly click on the pokemon again it is possible to have 2 of the same pokemon on the game in defense mode

  39. what plug in is required for this game?

    ReplyDelete
  40. When I said the first guns I meant the experimental first ones, not the rifles, and muskets (which weren't very accurate) came before rifles. Maybe horribly inaccurate muskets that have horrifically high damage would work nice :D

    ReplyDelete
  41. i think haveing barracks would be good like when u set them you get little people come out and they attack the lil evil thingamajigs :)

    ReplyDelete
  42. I was just playing the pre-alpha and thinking. In the demo the monsters moved in a straight line going through toward the girl you were defending, and some stop and spit fire at her. I think it could be helpful for levels like that where you are defending a person to be able to put a meat shield in front. Maybe not against melee enemies, who can choose who to hit. But with projectile-based enemies if they fire in a straight line rather than an arch, the projectile should hit the meat shield instead of the person you are defending.
