Countdown to PTD 2 Story Mode -
The next release of PTD 2 will have the very first quest, below you will find out the progress that I need to accomplish to reach this release. More things will be added and updated as I work on the game. Keep coming back to see my progress.


New Story Level! Pokemon Center update! v1.12 (08/24/12): Released now!

  • Added a new title screen made by our artist Kevin!

Pokemon Center
  • Added a much requested feature to the Pokemon Center! You can now search for trades that must have a request, or not have a request or both! 
New Level, Bug Fixes, New Additions v1.11 (08/17/12)
  • Added the pokemon's current attacks to the "Buy Pokemon" screen
  • Fixed a bug in level 3 pokemon getting whiter if you keep bringing them in and out
  • Added missing attacks to Pikachu (Tail Whip) and Spearow(Leer)
  • Removed Butterfree and Beedrill unlockables until you can earn enough experience to reach level 10
  • Added a small global cooldown (0.6 sec) when a pokemon is placed on the field, this will prevent pokemon from attacking instantly upon their arrival, it also gives the opponent a possible free hit when you are swapping pokemon
  • Fixed a stacking graphical bug on the party screen
HTD Status Update - 
Essentially Hero Tower Defense has been put on indefinite hold. We still love the idea and would love to start it up again but a number of things didn't work out for this project. We went for a high quality of hand drawn graphics that we thought we could achieve in a short time but the reality is that these graphics will take years in man hours to create and we don't have the resources to complete them. This is why we switched to 3D graphics but with our limited resources this was still an issue. If HTD comes back it will have a very simplistic style similar to the mobile game BattleHeart. Another big issue is that I'm the only programmer and my time is split between PTD and HTD. With PTD 1 being over my deal with Dan was to move to HTD more full time and only do PTD2 part time. But because of the graphic issues and the slow speed of development I didn't really have a choice but to move to PTD 2 at full force. (Also you guys wanted PTD2 more!) It is really hard to code two different engines at the same time. Even if they are the same genre (tower defense). Like I said I do hope this game will come back at some point in some shape or another.

ANPO has evolved! -
ANPO or Creatures Universe has evolved! I left a secret label in the blog post but nobody seemed to notice, and if they did they didn't mention it. "nadpto" if you change it around becomes "anpotd"! If you read the HTD update you will note that I said building two engines is hard work. Work that I don't have the time or resources to do right now. So I had this grand idea to expand PTD2 and have an overworld and seeing pokemon in the wild. Those are ideas from ANPO. So why not use the same engine that PTD 2 will use and have our designers come up with new creatures, new stories, new attacks, new abilities, and new graphics for all of these to make a new game? This is the idea of ANPO TD (Creatures Universe TD). What this means is I get to focus fully on PTD2's engine and I get 2 different games out of it. For you it means you get to have PTD2 faster than if we worked on a different full game at the same time and you get a whole new game a long with it! The games will have many differences so don't think this is just a quick re-skin. We plan to have a Kickstarter for it to help us out with paying the designers and being able to keep you entertained. What do you think?

  7. Small graphical bug Sam: In the fight with Ash, your Pokemon becomes colorless (as it should). But if you switch a Pokemon in and out a few times, then the Pokemon becomes whiter and whiter each time you switch in until you can barely see it. Great game Sam!

  11. hi, well, i tried to get buterfree on my game, i got a metapod on other one, and thus i killed EVERY enemy using only him, (i used some pokemons as sacrifice to do that) but i can get level 10 but i cant get buterfree since the last fight is the one he reachs level 10 (im not sure since i cant see) and for that i cant get her, also, one glitch, the pokemon wont evolve if he was suposed to reach the level when he defeats the last pokemon, i had a caterpie level 7. you can check that.

  16. First of all, I've been playing PTD since Mt. Moon 2 was introduced, and I must say, it has been my favorite online game period. I've played PTD 2 and it looks good so far except for one thing, I don't like how you can't keep the Pokemon you buy and thus can not get more powerful Pokemon except by unlocking them which is a chore since one loss sends you back to the beginning, this isn't much of a problem now but when we get like 20 - 30 levels it will just be frustrating so please let us keep our Pokemon that we buy and just raise the levels the opponents use to keep the whole get a little further each time thing.

  17. That's only for 1v1 mode, which is one of many types of game play modes that will be in ptd2. It's meant to be extremely challenging and to get progressively harder and more impossible as you progress. The main point is that you have to be very strategic about which pokemon you buy and raise early on, and that you have to plan it out every step, and this mode is not meant to be like normal game play. Of course, that's just my opinion, but I want 1v1 to be difficult. Story mode will be more like the classic ptd1 that you are used to, and you will be able to train your pokemon and grow attached to them on that mode.

  29. ANPO (aka "Creature Online Universe") is another (awesome) project that was "put on hold" (they said) two months ago but now they're reviving it (at least this is what I understood...).   34. Hi Sam, I had an idea recently that I thought would be amazing if it got put into PTD2. What if there was a 2v2 Doubles Mode like 1v1, but 2 people could do online co-op and play together as a team! It would have the same levels as 1v1 I guess with higher leveled pokemon to beat (so its balanced). You would be able to play with a friend you know or a random person. Thanks for reading my suggestion. :)

  38. Sam. In these moment it's impossible to gather enough experience to evolve kakuna & metapod, even if u buy them at level 7 and defeat every waves from all levels. Could u please slightly increase the experience or the level from the last pokemon (Sandshrew), or add another pokemon in these level in order to enable them to reach the level 10??? thanks

  50. cherrim98... it's "easy". U must buy metapod or kakuna, caterpie, weedle (them both with shield dust), ratata (change run away to guts), spearow and pidgey (them both with keen eye)


    Level 1. Can be done only using metapod or kakuna, but try to use harden 6 times as soon as u can, and also use string shot with your offensive move (tackle or poison sting)


    Level 2. Use first caterpie or weedle using string shot and their offensive move. When the enemy's HP are low stop using your offensive move and use only string shot even if it's stocked 6 times on the enemy. Wait the enemy defeat you and use kakuna or metapod using harden and their offensive move.


    Without changing your pokemon, continue using harden since you stack it 6 times, and then use your offensive move since the second enemy is defeated.


    Against beedril, change kakuna or metapod for spearow or pidgey using growl or sand attack and their offensive move. When the enemy's HP are lower than 25% stop using your offensive move and wait till the enemy defeat you. Then use your kakuna or metapod with their offensive move and string shot.


    Level 3. Use first caterpie in the same way u did against the first pokemon in level 2; when you're defeated, use metapod or kakuna with their attack move and harden (try to stack it 6 times in these round)


    Against pidgeot use spearow using growl and his attack move. When you're defeated use kakuna or metapod using his attack move and string shot


    Against the last one (these pesky pikachu), first use weedle in the same way u used caterpie in the round 1. Then use ratatta only with tail whip as much as u can. Last use metapod or kakuna with their offensive move.


    Level 4. Use metapod or kakuna with harden (try to stack it 6 times in these round), string shot and their offensive move


    Against pidgey first use spearow in the same way u did against pidgeot; then use metapod or kakuna with their offensive move


    Against pikachu first use pidgey with sand attack and tackle move. Stop using tackle when the enemy's HP are low and wait till he defeats you. Then use metapod or kakuna with their offensive move


    Against spearow use kakuna or metapod, he'll decrease your defense, so use harden to refill the defense lost, remember to use also string shot


    Against nidoran F first use ratata in the same way u did against the pikachu in the level 3. Then use metapod or kakuna with their offensive move and string shot. Against nidoran M continue using kakuna or metapod in the same way u did against spearow


    Level 5. Against digglet first use pidgey or spearow in the same way u did against beedril; then use kakuna or metapod with harden (try to stack it 6 times), string shot and their offensive move.


    Against sandsrew first use ratata with tail whip and their offensive moves; when u're defeated, use metapod or kakuna with their offensive move and string shot.


    By these way you'll defeat all enemies using kakuna or metapod, however u won't be able to envolve them because of the lack of experience (it's requiered another level or one more pokemon in the previous one)


    If u wanna gather lot of money use geodude and pikachu in all levels, try to level up geodude to level 8 as soon as possible, in order to learn rock polish and "sacrifice" pikachu (using only growl till the enemy defeats you) in hard enemies, such as beedril (level 2) or pidgey (level 4). Geodude with rock polish and defense curl stacked 6 times is a killing machine ;)

  66. Sam, you truly are a passionate genius! I think you're going just the right way about everything, by the sounds of it!




    Also, when ANPO does come out, as it'll be with custom designed creatures etc, will you be holding competitions for user-submitted creatures, as I find there are LOADS of talented designers out there who may help with the diversity and creativity of the project. It'll help you in the sense that the game will be of a higher quality (not suffering similar "lack of ideas" syndrome that some think Pokemon has), and it'll be fun for others to put their ideas out there, maybe even get noticed!
    (I'm absolutely talentless at art, by the way... So defo not me :P)

  72. Sam I have an idea for the modes. You can make a different challenge mode, you can put the pokemons and challenger chooses to run the place, and if it is in the air, water or land in the challenger chooses. Furthermore the players could make teams to fight together and include characters such as Joey, Falkner, Vincent, Marina, Officer Jenny, Nurse Joe and put the police headquarters and the center pokemon (all on the map).

  79. Now that you have the time cost for switching pokes(so this feature wouldn't be abused) can you make it where switching purges stat changes and status effects that don't stick(confused/seeded) when switched like in the normal game?
    PS Sorry, I realize that all these ideas are probably overwhelming at times and some of them can potentially be a pain in the ass hardcore if they grate against the design of the game(and it's often the little things that are the worst), but it's an OCD trait that I couldn't kick in Intro and I can't kick it here either.

If u wanna make money, it isn't really neccesary to buy pikachu; u can buy weedle or caterpie instead of pikachu, that are cheaper and use in the same way (as a "sacrifice" using string shot against strong enemies like beedrill or sand-spammers like digglet (level5) pidgey (level4) or pidgeot (level3)). However u've tu buy geodude :)


    PS: i've saved more than 1000 pokedollars in 1vs1 mode by this way (and I would have much more money if i hadn't wasted it trying to evolve kakuna and metapod), and the more levels there are, the more money i'll save :)

  96. Hey sam, I want to report a bug. Ever since you released the new 1v1 mode, I've been having trouble saving. During a 1v1 battle, if you click menu/lose, a box would appear saying that its saving Please wait..... But I waited for a rather long time and I think the game froze. Refreshing shows that i lost all the coins i had collected, I played the game before this update with no problems so I think it happened with the last update.

    P.S. Is your name supposed to be mii (as in from the wii and 3ds) and xi (as in roman numerals for 11), or is it just a random nickname you came up with?

  98. The server isn't strong enough to work with so many players at once, so it gets slow at some times. Your best bet is to refresh.

  99. It isn't a bug and it doesn't have to do with the update. With so many players online, the server can't work nearly as efficiently, and thus, very slow saving. It is inconvenient, but your best bet is to refresh.

  100. me too. Geodude and weedle (using weedle with string shot most of the time as a "sacrifice" against beedril (level2), pidgeot (level3), pidgey (level4) and sandsrew (level5)). Once slowed down and hurt, they're easily defeated by a geodude with a defense curl stacked 6 times; once he learns rock polish at lvl8 he's unstoppable!!

  118. slowed down by the string shot of weedle (lvl2), geodude receive a lot of damage fighting against beedrill using fury attack, so you've to "sacrifice" a pokemon against weedle or weaken beedrill (by slowing him down, decreasing it's attack...) if u don't do like that you'll need a lot of luck in order to get some critical hits, or a decreased amount of hits taken by fury attack.


    I think it's better using a second pokemon that sacrifices himself against beedril or weedle (lvl2), and also against the sand-spammers (like pidgeot lvl3, pidgey lvl4 or sandsrew lvl5). It will ensure your victory

  127. The new cooldown on attacks really changed the system, it's so slow if you're using the keyboard keys. Really hard to do.

  130. there isn't enough experience in the whole 5 levels in order to get them; even if defeat every wave from every level using metapod or kakuna bought at lvl 7 (using other pokemon as a sacrifice or even buying a lot of healing potions). I've tested that losing a lot of money and I can ensure it's impossible (It would be neccesary another 1vs1 level or one more wave in any level

    I had this idea for the story mode: in order to keep it a tower defense game, perhaps you should first unlock a map for walking around by beating it in a level (like PTD1), then you can walk around and battle pokemon the way you said. So, say I wanted to go to route 29 for the first time, then I would first need to beat some waves, and then I could simply walk around all the other times I wanted to.

  136. Yo sam, I just got an idea for make the game more like the originals. Make the TMs unlockable! If you have all the TMs from scratch, a Cyndaquil with fire blast just pwnes all the mons out there, and makes the game way too easy. Just win the TMs is a better idea, I hope you like it.

  144. I think what he means is to make gameplay revolve more around engaging and interesting plot rather than to play the game simply to win and collect items or achievements. As in making it more like a comic or novel rather than a game. Put more emphasis on the hero part of hero tower defense, explain to the player why your character is a hero, create empathy for the character and contempt for the villains. Basically, instead of making a 'background story' for you game, make your game an epic story similar to that of the odyssey or moby dick or frankenstein. Story concentric instead of gameplay concentric.

  166. Sam, I think I encountered a small bug or error on level 4. When facing the Lass, one of my pokemon was simultaneously paralyzed from Pikachu's Static and poisoned by Nidoran's Poison Point. I don't know if this would apply to any other situations (such as by a move vs by an ability), but I wanted to leave a comment about it as soon as I saw it. Thanks for pumping out these levels so quickly, Sam; you're doing a fantastic job.

  170. Loving what you've done so far! One suggestion for the 1 vs 1 mode (although I know your focus is Story): items should carry over as well as coins between all challenges. I can see why you want us to have new pokemon every time (having to train wisely, trying new combinations, etc.). This seems like an obvious suggestion, so maybe someone else has already posted. If so, I'm just re-iterating.
